I really fucking like this controller actually. I can't think of another console where the controller pairs to the games so well that it actually feels weird to play them with anything else. F-Zero X in particular is absolutely gimped with any other controller because of the precise movements it requires, and modern controllers having cheapo sticks that go from 0 to 100 in an instant. Sad that the stick inevitably breaks down over time but at least you can get replacements.

I'm still waiting to encounter my first video game that really really needs two analog sticks. But I ran into multiple games on the N64 that benefited from the freedom to hold the single stick with either hand. It's a great controller.

The accuracy of the joystick is the closest thing you can get to a mouse. It's why it feels so good, and why emulating so many games without properly calibrating the emulation joystick for your controller will feel like ass.

I'm far from a tendie, but I thought it was fine in 1997 playing at a friends house. Ditto for the Dreamcast controller. Then you get on the internet as an adult and everyone is traumatized by those lol.

Meanwhile I did not find the Dual Shocks comfortable despite me playing the Playstations a lot but now everyone worships the old versions so *shrugs*

Agreed, it's one of my favorites for sure. Can't be replaced for N64 games imo.

It brutally mogs non analog PS1 and Saturn that's for sure. Even Dreamcast because Dreamcast puts the DPad right under the analog stick.

It was ahead of its time.

I agree. love it, it makes playing n64 games so much more fun
>I can't think of another console where the controller pairs to the games so well that it actually feels weird to play them with anything else.
nintendo ds for one
saturn and the handful of genesis games that use the 6 buttons
that one dreamcast game where the vmu is used during gameplay and it matters
some wiiu games, I suppose, though in all the ones I played the second screen was used as a permanent inventory screen or map or whatever

but I feel that way about most consoles, really
I don't even want to play master system games without the og master system controller, for instance, and that's just a generic nes controller clone

and if there's an on screen display that depicts the controller I will autistically refuse to play it with a controller that doesn't look like it

Criticizing it is certainly an overreaction even when it's not downright memery.

To be fair though, the entire point of the design was versatility for different gameplay styles and in that regard the Dual Shock proved that you didn't really need to have two different grips and the same purpose could be achieved with no drawbacks using a much more traditional layout.

it feels a bit naive as well
3 grips for 3 dimensions!
different ways to hold it for different, all new! kinds of gameplay only possible in 3d
I like that kind of experimental design
though I think the dual stick was also partially accidental, no? it feels like it took a while for games to actually take advantage of the layout for simultaneous movement and camera control, though it feels so obvious now
I doubt the people who designed it even thought about it like that, but I may be wrong
I think a controller designed from the ground up for dual stick use would have more back buttons. though the face buttons are useful for versatility, of course

I will say, I think humanity took a wrong step by standardizing two rows of shoulder buttons, and clickable sticks. I just don't like it.

Half of the people talking shit have never touched the controllers in question, or only did after the fact and went "wtf, this is different to new controllers. WEIRD!".

That's a very unique take. Personally I fucking hate the controller. It's ridiculous how annoying it is to handle in my case.

The guntrigger at the back is cool, everything else about it is cringe. The analogue stick and d-pad literally give blisters.

I personally think the n64 controller feels best in the hand and more ergonomic than the Dreamcast or ps1/ps2 controllers IMO. Just an observation I’ve made. I’m not saying it’s the better controller but what I’m saying is if you’re using it for an hour or more it feels better than the other ones. Plasystation 1 and 2 controllers are shaped like a dollar I’ll which doesnt fit your hands ergonomically and it’s also too small. Been a while since I used a Dreamcast controller but the size is better but I’m pretty sure it had some edge or area which felt out of place if you used it too long. I like them all though.

I'm a certified N64 control hater but that probably has more to do with the fact that I don't really like N64 games. I do agree the stick works much better for the games than other controllers.

I really like the feel of the shoulder buttons on the N64 controller.
C buttons are fine for camera control, I like how they're used in Zelda.
The Z button is obviously great for shooters.
The stick is the best stick ever, bar it wearing out, but there are solutions to that. It's easy to take apart, no soldering required.
The D pad is good but the build quality can vary on N64 controllers and it's noticeable in the D pad.
With the A and B buttons they finally put B above A at a comfortable upward angle
Did away with the mushy start button and just used a regular button.
Did away with the select button because it's almost useless.
Apart from the stick it's actually a really durable controller. I have a box full of junk controllers which are only junk because of worn sticks and cosmetic flaws, otherwise they're fine. The rubber membranes hold up much better than on the SNES.
Want rumble? Add rumble pak. Don't like rumble? No problem.

One thing I noticed when trying with a Dual Shock is that the N64 stick is better for games where jump is 'up' instead of a dedicated jump button. I think having the octagon or whatever shape is useful to so you can lock-in when jump forwards or crouching forwards

That makes sense. I know speedrunners like the octagon shape because it makes it easier to hit the same inputs consistently.

Yeah, you coukd probably make bank by making a little octagon that snaps on and off the left stick on the DS4 and 5. It would make certain platformers and fighting games that don't do too much stuff like semi-circles (ex. Tekken) really smooth to play.

It's my all-time favourite controller

I don't care if the analogue stick dies after a year, I don't care if the d-pad sucks, I don't care if it sucks when used for a game which isn't designed around it, I love the damn thing anyway

eh it's not very good for shooters. using the c buttons for movement feels like ass and the alt dpad scheme doesn't have enough buttons to be viable for most games.

I generally have a thing for quirky controllers with some character so I like it a lot as well but N64 kids creaming themselves about muh accurate analog stick are delusional.

Doubtful. I made something like that ages ago. It's very easy to design/make and not a new idea. If there was much money to be made making such a thing someone would have probably done it long ago.

Tell me how Monster Hunter Wilds doesn't need a 2nd analog stick.
It almost needs 3 because focus mode is a button that changes how the camera stick works. Not defending capcom's weirdness but how does Monster Hunter only need 1 stick?
