You are transported back in time to 1988 and are placed in a position of highest authority within Sega. What do you do to make the Genesis a success world wide and not just in North America?

I would firmly oppose the 32x and CD add-ons, opting to localize Japan only games such as MW4 instead

Nothing, Sega deserved their success with the Genesis, and there isnโ€™t much that could have been done in development to improve it. They managed to negotiate an expensive chip to use for the CPU down to 10% with a distributor only by pinky-promising that the console would be successful.

The SG-1000 was too weak, and the Master System was just a bandaid, but this time, they made sufficiently powerful hardware with longevity and sold it at a reasonable price. Itโ€™s what they ended up doing with it that ruined them.

Tell the accountants to list loans by Sega Enterprises Ltd. to Sega of America as money transactions between different branches of the company and not as loans owed to Sega Enterprises Ltd. by third party businesses. Sega of Japan really thought that they had millions of dollars in reserve held by other companies, when in reality it was just Tom Kalinske sucking them dry.

No. Fix the color limitations and support the add on with actual games. Try to get a port of Rondo for it as well.

It had a color ram bus that supported up to 32KB that went unused, also it was supposed to have background and sprite scaling but that got rejected in favor of Master System support because of Europe.

It was a bigger success in Europe than the US in terms of market share % against the competition. So basically you're asking to save it in Japan, which the answer is "steal Dragon Quest from Nintendo" which it isn't realistic.

CD add-on's problem was that it was much more than a CD drive it had CPU and graphics chip and it was connected through cartridge data port. Either make the CD drive work without additional CPU and GPU, or if it's impossible relase it as a new system backwards compatible with Sega Genesis. Sega CD as an add on was just too expensive and too complicated.

Litigate against Nintendo for poaching their developers, securing overwhelming shares in retailers and refusing to let them stock your product, do the opposite abroad and leverage it to hurt Nintendo, and use the networking research being done for online play to be instead utilized in a developer network to allow quicker transmission of games and milestones giving room for faster production and translation efforts. Also don't do the weird ad thing just keep things focused on games, especially upcoming ones while reminding people consistently of the established franchises as things go forward.

explain Im from the future, and everything that happens, and both draw sonic for them and try to make them sign a deal with Sony in 93 or so so they can make the sega playstation, a cd add on for the genesis/its own console

Hayao Nakayama said "nintendo was our rival, but sony was our enemy" the ps1 hurt them bad, its better to make sure saturn and dreamscast arent flops than to make the genesis win

PC Engine already had the hardcore gamer market in Japan when Mega Drive launched. Got there first with the same types (or even literally the same) games.

No it did not. Where does this 32kb color bus nonsense come from. The VDP external color bus is 8 bits representing the pixel color currently being drawn.

128K VRAM as originally intended
Remove master system support to free up VDP die space
128 colors, (64 sprites, 64 background)
Connect ym2612 IRQ line
Give Z80 bus priority
Make z80 bank register parallel
Map part of 68k ram into unused z80 address space

>six button controller released at launch
>never make the 32X
>try to steal away game exclusives/rights from Nintendo
>Sonic 1 is immediately made the pack in game
>later revision models retain the soundchip of the original model
>SOR3 US version doesn't have the retard difficulty it released with
>SOR3 also retains most of its original story and characters, I do get that Ash may be a huge issue for the mommies of the time period though
>any of those Sega channel games get actual physical releases
>in fact no Sega channel gimmick
>going back to the earlier point, try to strike some deal with Midway for at least MK1 exclusivity, don't overpay for exclusivity if they want too much though
>in addition to Wily Wars collection 1, get Capcom to make collection 2 (also these ports need to and should be smooth with little to no slowdowns)
>also get Capcom to release the MMX games on Genesis (even if its a different version as what often happened with Genesis games)
>Sonic 3 delayed so that it ships as the complete game it was always meant to be shipped as (combined with Knuckles)

That is really all I can think about actually as far as what may have been realistically possible for the time and also putting aside most of my fanboy bias or fantasy what if scenarios aside. Some of these biases though I think are no brainers most of us would agree with like how Mega Man X should have had Genesis ports.

They had Phantasy Star, which they dropped the ball with between 1 and 4. As for why try to make it bigger in Japan, they need more JP devs on hand, no matter what market. Even for smaller devs that might make JP only games, some of those games ended up being supported by a bigger company or the console maker themselves and being huge worldwide hits.
As for what I would do that hasn't been messaged, I woukd change the marketing and image of the products. Genesis gave me the impression that it was cheaper or lower down the totem pole than the SNES . From the cases, to the cartridges, to the ads, etc

>six button controller released at launch

I don't see the point of this ... The 6-Button, or "Arcade Controller" was specifically made for fighting games, because Arcade Fighter cabinets had 6 buttons at the time. There are few Mega Drive games that utilize the extra buttons. I feel like 3 buttons is all you need.

The thing is that if the console released with the six button controller right from the start then you would have gotten games made with that in mind and the games absolutely would have been even better. Of course this is an alternate reality type of scenario based on the OP anyways. So this would be in hindsight of course. I don't think its out of the realm of realism though considering they did release a six button controller and SNES had one right at launch. Sega released theirs as an answer to the SNES controller plus for the fighting games as you said.

I think that's wishful thinking, Anon. The games wouldn't have necessarily been better just because they utilized more buttons. They could even be worse, if the games were considered convoluted. I'm just saying that sometimes simplicity is best.
