>Try to keep things /vr/ related: Focus should be on 6th Gen Consoles and older. Slight off topic is fine so long as it's related to CRTs, such as later 16:9 models, HD models, etc. Systems with backwards compatibility are also safe territory, as are re-releases on newer hardware. PC CRTs are also welcome and appreciated.
>Produce OC! Bust out your camera and take photos of your CRTs displaying all sorts of games, featuring all sorts of tubes, using all sorts of signals. Getting good shots can be hard, but if you take enough, at least a few will turn out alright.
>Try and give as much information as possible when asking for info on a specific set, or troubleshooting an issue to expedite and help you may receive. As always, Google is your friend and we are your friends with benefits. Do people read this? Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either; Seriously, there's literally 6 years of backlog at this point.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. Always remember to show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Limited discussion of video processing and scaling devices is alright, but remember to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories.

not sure the model, but it's silver, so likely manufactured post-2000. but it's also not flat like a lot of post-2000 tubes, so geometry might be better. sitting in a garage could mean bug nest inside, or worse, exposure to too much humidity and/or cold depending on your location. i'd ask if they could post any pictures with a movie playing on the screen or something.

Are there reliable crts today that you do not need to worry about having faulty internals? Or are they all a dice roll? my relative has some small one and Iโ€™m unsure if i should even plug it in after 20 years of it sitting in a closet. it being fully discharged (I assume) might be for the best if we just end up tossing it out.

Reposting, because the previous thread was archived

Is it possible to convert NTSC S-Video signal to PAL 60Hz (PAL60 I guess), without perceivable lag? I'm talking about a situation, when a PAL TV displays the NTSC video, but only in black and white, as it can't decode the colors. I tried looking for a device like this, but there's surprisingly little info on this particular use case

Man... I bought two mint condition 9 inch white trinitrons a few months ago for $200. Just got around to using one of them and something failed after a few days of use, now it gets no display when turned on. Out of my many tvs, these are the last ones I would expect to fail because they've clearly seen almost no use. When turned on they give off the smell of new electronics and the tube is clearly unused. Now I've been using the other one for a few days and it's been fine so far, I'm seeing no bad symptoms like the other one that would occasionally flicker. Guess I'll get the other one repaired at some point and hopefully this one works well for a long time.

It's not possible to laglessly convert regular PAL to NTSC. Reglar PAL uses 625 lines per two frames (interlaced. cut in half for progressive 50Hz), while NTSC uses 525 lines (262.5 lines at 240p60). PAL frames simply take longer to display, so any conversion to NTSC requires at least one frame of lag, in order to let one PAL frame get fully stored while the NTSC video generator works on another frame.

To my knowledge, PAL60 is basically NTSC timings with the PAL color signaling. It will work, and will appear grayscale on an NTSC TV with no mods. But to be honest, I would rather use Component or RGB.

Nevermind, I messed up and misread the post. I apologise.

Yeah, NTSC grayscale will work on a PAL60 capable TV. Color systems are mutually incompatible though. You could synthesize some direct analog chroma circuit, but that would require an encoder and decoder, which would be a pain in the ass to make since the encoder and decoder chips are often purpose-built to be accessories to other bigger circuits.

Maybe a bored engineer can do some bullshit using some NTSC to SDI IC, and then an SDI to PAL IC, with a sync stripper to align everything? Not worth it IMO.

Once black frame insertion is perfect and OLEDs aren't out of my price range I will probably ditch them forever. It's just a matter of time.

I've also got a 29" set, but its geometry is wonky and I can't be assed to get around and fix it, especially that it requires fucking around the yoke (vertical bowing that's really noticable), so it sits in storage as a backup, otherwise I'd be using it instead.
I can imagine having a small set like a 14", but for a desk setup at best.

you may just want to try and hunt down a PAL CRT that can handle NTSC - they made them in the 90s and 2000s

otherwise most PAL sets should be able to accept RGB, so modifying your console hardware may be the way to go instead (if it doesn't already natively output RGB)

80s models with a SCART socket should support 60Hz and NTSC too. I used to have a couple from the mid-to-late 80s that did so just fine. Of course, they're long-since dead and gone, like most sets from that era.

Posts like this make it really apparent that CRTs are to video games what turntables are to music.
>Technology that's been around longer than anyone using it has been alive.
>Seen as antiquated and cumbersome to those who had to pay for/carry them around when they didn't have any alternatives. Cool and "retro" to those who didn't.
>Can be free to get into if you find one on the side of the road or you can spend five figures on a really impressive example.
>Easy to waste money on bad, overpriced shit if you don't know what you're doing
>Those blissfully unaware they're using bad equipment contrast with the quality dick-measuring contest participants
>Sometimes despised by those who have never actually used one
>Even with those who swear by it, you likely won't find anyone who completely eschews newer technology in favor of it.
>A small community unto itself within a subset of a much broader hobby

People can argue about the merits of both as much as they want, but it's a matter of taste at the end of the day.

I already have a couple CRTs which can do real NTSC without issues. But I also have one that doesn't and it's my childhood set. It's a composite only piece of shit, but I like it. I'd use it at least on occasion, but you won't see me playing butchered 50Hz conversions, fuck that. Other than that, I'm looking to get into Commodore 64 with an appropriate monitor and the earlier ones don't have RGB. So yeah, I could use w good way to convert NTSC to PAL60 but that seems impossible

So as someone who has not used a CRT since like maybe 2006 or something, I do not remember what they look like. I mainly played n64 games through the 90s, and then during the 2000s played a GameCube and an Xbox. Did they console benefit from CRT? Was it just the 64? Do I need to get a CRT to see the 64 games as they are intended to be seen?

I thought people who emulated using those filter things were retarded but after listening to your guys explanation of dithering effecting sprites and models it makes sense and Iโ€™m sure a filter is at least closer to the real thing than nothing at all.

Did the GBA or GBASP screen have any sort of crt effect? I donโ€™t think it did. I only find this interesting because Iโ€™m wondering if those devices you were supposed to see the raw pixels or not. Contrasted to something like a SNES where supposedly you werenโ€™t supposed to see the raw pixels. Iโ€™m wondering if a GBA game ran through the gameboy player on the GameCube, and displayed on a CRT would look better or worse. Iโ€™m thinking maybe worse? Because the that screen didnโ€™t dither anything?

Most N64 emulation does not in fact look like an actual N64 unless you use Parallel RDP
And yes they do look a lot better on a CRT

>The "benefits" of vinyl are entirely non-tech-related elements
Regardless of whether it makes sense or not (mastering is ultimately what really matters), there are those out there who primarily appreciate vinyl for its technical merits. From the outside looking in, it also looks like they just got into it because it looks cool.

Yes, and yet still technically inferior to a CD created from the same master recording.
>the medium it was originally designed for
That would be played live to a human ear.
>there are those out there who primarily appreciate vinyl for its technical merits
Vinyl has no "tehnical merits" compared to CDs. It's not a subjective topic. You can test, measure and provide evidence of the additional motion clarity that comes as standard with an impulse-based display. Scientific testing of vinyl versus CD quality digital audio literally always favors the latter, with any suggestions to the contrary boiling down to "trust me, bro."

honestly i'd be willing to say n64 is the one console that benefits the most from being played on a crt. but any 2d pixel art based game in general will see big benefits too.

as far as gba and other handhelds go, a lot of people will use filters that mimic those consoles specific lcd screen grids, which is what gives them their unique look. i would say their small screen also benefited them and was kind of how their pixel art was "blended" in the absence of a crt screen, in which case i personally feel playing them on a big screen misses out on some of their charm

Yeah, I think for the most part, retro gaming is a technical/gear sort of hobby, similar to being an audiophile, hotting up cars, buying camping gear, or upgrading a guitar pedalboard. It's more a technical hobby than a media/consumption hobby, although that differs person to person, some retro game a lot and don't even touch shaders and don't really care.

it depends. consoles, anything 15hz consumer TV level, probably pointless.
If you are emulating something like a 486 or x68000 that used medium or higher res it would be useful but they are fairly unique cases.
But both of them are something i'd just emulate on a modern pc with a high res monitor with freesync and a shader. CRT -monitors- are not something i'd personally deal with all the downsides of to keep around. (CRT -tv- is a different story)

It does work much better, mostly because the resolution is not scaled up like on LCDs. Everything will still be pixelated with low color depth, and will not really be "blended", but anything low res will still look much better than on modern panels

Not nearly as big of a niche for them as crt tvs, but they're good for old pc games, especially fpses. 120+hz on a crt is amazing. Part of the reason they're good for old pc games is convenience, you won't have to mess with ini files all the time trying to get an old game to run at 1080p or higher on a modern monitor and whatever else since you just rock whatever resolution on the fly and it will look really good. The flip side though is that crt monitors will sometimes have problems with modern games, usually menus and UI since devs don't even bother including support for older aspect ratios. One downside of crt monitor is that they're kind rare now and you really need a decent model or you might as well not bother, so prepare to hunt awhile and pay a bit.

I have a Mitsubishi CRT monitor from '93 but it has a power issue. I can hear it whine so I assume that the flyback is functional but I get absolutely no video or power light on.
