Did anyone actually pay attention to this game’s story during their first playthrough? It seemed so inconsequential that I never felt urged to learn the ins and outs of the lore. Also, feel free to discuss other Tales of titles if you'd like.

i did.
played it for the first time like 2 years ago and after playing many other tales games.
it's just standard tales slop, nothing too good or too bad about it but still entertaining.
the game itself is overrated and overhyped as fuck though.

I payed attention because the characters were good and it's woven in fairly well. I can't really remember all the world building but I was impressed by the story when I played it. Kinda the centerpiece of the game anon

>Story
>Lore
Holy cringe. If it isn't made by Sakaguchi or Nomura then you are pretty much better off just button mashing through any text and figuring out what to do on your own.
>MUH FEELINGS, AND MUH KINGDOM VERSUS THEIR KINGDOM AND OUR RELATIONSHIPS!
Fuck off.
>Tidus time travelled to the past but it's actually the future, and meets his dad's friend after his dad rode a boat to the future, but not really, and maybe Tidus doesn't exist, and everybody's gonna die, btw Roxas waa made from Sora but what about Ventus, and Xemnas might be Ansem but you gotta get the ultimate keyblade to unlock Kingdom Hearts, which is some ubexplained energy, but don't worry Donald is here, and Jenova came from space and Sephiroth was made from her, and Cloud was juicing with her DNA or something btw Cloud stole some dude's identity but mixed it with his own and Aerith is an ancient, so what are everyone that aren't Ancients?
Fucking kino, that's how it's done.

Isn’t the whole point of the Desians running human ranches for magic energy extraction that they were hated for being half-elves and wanted revenge on the humans who mistreated them? That’s why the half-elf siblings had to flee their village when people realized they were half-elves like the Desians, not pure-bloods. It’s been a while since I played, but that’s how I remember it.

Its funny that the most popular entries, Vesperia and Symphonia, can be attributed to "rare rpg in the machine" phenomenom as they were like one of the few rpgs on the gamecube and 360 specifically.
Otherwise seems like the series has always just been there.

you are half right.
yes, the desians ultimate goal was to rule the world because they are mistreated by humans and elves. not just petty revenge.
raine and genis were expelled not just because they were half-elves, but also because they deceived them saying they were pure elves.
and half-elves are bad because they just are, ok?

I get why the humans would be skeptical of half elves. They live longer and have an innate ability to sense and wield magic, so it makes sense to be suspicious of their presence within human settlements. Although, from what I remember, the elves’ view of half elves is basically that they’re inferior and a shame on the elven race.

I was actually more interested in Presea’s story, why she was physically and emotionally stunned, and her older sister’s relationship with the rich blue haired guy in cuffs.

It's the truth (as I see it). Sitting through a storyline where you listen to fictional people emote about how they feel and what they want to do is a waste of time and there is no reason to care. Give me mystery you can't quite ever get to the bottom of and shit to unravel then I will care. A game just about fictional politics is boring and pointless. Some kind of political intrigue and getting to the bottom of things and complicated situations that end up being grounded in something non-sentimental with strong will and shit is good (Final Fantasy Tactics).

One of the GOATs, just too many games and remasters. KH, FF7, FF10, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Mulholland Drive, Space 2001. You understand what is going on, but you don't understand what is really going on, and you can ignore all that anyway and still enjoy shit.

Let's see...

I enjoyed the escalation once you hit the middle section, every faction in the world suddenly trying to kill you, that then gave way into deep-diving into how Cruxis worked. And I kept a couple of the very obvious teases in the back of my mind waiting to be paid off. I did notice that the whole mana system felt grafted on to the world and only solved problems it created, and sure enough the game all but says it (and then the bad sequel says it point blank). But once you learn the villains are 4000 years old the broader setting becomes a farce. In Symphonia's own context, anyway, Tales of Phantasia stands on its own. But then I'm pretty sure both phenomenon are common with this series.

>>11896015
The first section absolutely reads like a take on FFX; a naive holy teenager that grew up away from society to be trained to save it from a cyclical evil by visiting classical element temples assisted by her counter-culture boyfriend. After that they do have a lot of shared concepts on paper and talk about self-determination a lot but they go in different directions with them. FFX is definitely the more focused game.

Gotta agree with this. I remember when i played ToS the first time the story was so "i don't give a single fuck about any of this" it made me genuinely wonder wether i was too old to play video games.
Turns out it wasn't video games, it was just Tales.

Where did you get this sentiment?
The most dick sucked games in the series are on the PS2 and have a steady fast following in nipland.

bro, it's button mashing: the game among the tales series.
there is no strategy involved other than pressing block when needed and moving out of the way if you can.
there is no freerun and the combo system is almost nonexistent.
30fps are enough. i have played on gamecube and ps3.
