Anyone else always hated how the subweapon system is implemented in classicvania games?

It's amazing how CV3 looks, sounds, and plays identical to CV1 and yet they still managed to fuck up how you go down stairs (can no longer go up/down diagonally, must only hold up or down in isolation in order to start using the stairs) and the ability to use subweapons on stairs

No? It's probably the most memorable subweapon system from any game ever.

>must only hold up or down in isolation in order to start using the stairs
That's part of the fun.

the only thing that sucks is not having a different candle sprite for drops. once you get a decent subweapon you have to wait a beat for every single candle you hit.

but that's just the same idea just even better because you get like a hundred of em to play with, same with portrait's and maybe ecclesia's (haven't played it yet but i heard you're like a mage in that one so idk)

No, it's literally fine. Each subweapon does a different thing, and you need to choose one of them at a time.

Aria is a completely different formula, it's even different in this regard compared to Symphony, which it's partially derived from. Aria doesn't just put what would normally be subweapons into soul attacks, but it also does that for spells and relic transformation stuff.

Aria is probably my favorite Igavania too, it's good as fuck, but I never had a problem with how the ClassicVanias handled subweapons, it was fine for the arcade action it was going for.

I kinda like that idea actually. For instance, the Axe is by far the most practical subweapon to me in Dracula X, and I really don't want to pick up any of the other ones if I can help it.

No, mostly I thought they were underutilized. Maybe being able to swap between sub weapons would be better for gameplay.

Hated is a strong word but I only ever found it interesting when they had stuff like item crashes.

As long as you get to pick your previous subweapon back up its fine, ideal would be to not loose your multiplier.

I hate getting trolled by a dagger

>your multiplier.
I've always thought that the multiplier is kinda useless in those games except maybe a few instances I don't remember. I mean you can stunlock Death in 1 without it iirc

Three crosses flying around are devastating. I guess it's less important with the other weapons though

>have to use two button combo for subweapon
>can't use subweapon going down stairs (or at all in CV3)
>accidentally picking up a subweapon instantly deletes your current subweapon
>dying instantly deletes your current subweapon
>no way to see what items candles and enemies will drop
>dropped subweapons only last a few seconds
>only a few subweapons are even worth using in specific sections
>item upgrades (II and III blocks) are extremely under fleshed out
Yeah it's honestly terrible and so poorly implemented. I don't know what the perfect solution is, but just about anything is better than how they did it. As a result, subweapons are basically only useful in a select few sections where they give you the subweapon that helps right before that section then you just rely on your whip for everything else

Most people aren't aware that hitting a candle that drops a subweapon WITH a subweapon tends to drop item II/III instead. Works in both 1 and 3.

Also Castlevania's sub weapon system was an upgrade from the game it cloned. At least if you accidentaly pick up something not suitable for the current situation you still have your whip, unlike in Ghost'n Goblins where picking up the wrong weapon at the wrong time can make your life hell.
