Picked this game up on a whim.
I'm loving the "boy goes on a grand adventure" vibes of it, while also being surprisingly grim in places.

If you are playing it as it released in english its still ok but there was some stuff that got changed. Worth looking up afterwards at least.

I like this game and have some fond memories of it but it's a little heavy handed at times and has moments that try to be poignant but come off goofy.
I do think it looks great and I love little details like your character's clothes blowing in the wind. I think the "stranded at sea" section of the game is a nice bit of storytelling and character development and some of the towns and characters are interesting.
It also always sort of bothered me that it's considered a part of the Actraiser line of games but doesn't have any of the world creation aspects the other ones do.

Great game. Largely underappreciated compared to other SNES JRPGs

It's "wholesome" soap opera shit for little children. The gameplay is boring.

Story-wise you mean? All I've heard is that the difficulty got increased in the US version

Wholesome? There's child slavery, suicide and a graphic death scene with an assassin burning to death that lasts much longer than you'd expect it to.
I think you're thinking Terranigma

Not that anon, but say something bad about Terranigma and I'll break your face so bad that it'll look like a picasso.

Did you mean Soul Blazer & Terranigma?

Yeah well Iโ€™ve always considered Actraiser part of that series. I even think Soul Blazer was marketed as the sequel to Actraiser. Thereโ€™s lots of thematic similarities at least.

Even as a kid, the localization attempts to brush it off wasn't fooling me.

Those 4 games share a similar theme, I always wondered why no one ever put Actraiser in with Soulblazer/Illusian of Gaia/Terranigma. They're all great games, although Soulblazer is a little too simplistic it's still decent.

i know it's meant to be all touching and emotional but the localization's clunky writing made that goddamn hilarious.

It's very relaxing. Quintet got that mechanic down perfect.

It's a strange game, on the surface it's a fun adventure but there is always some underlying unease involved.
