Why do NES games manage to have distinct soundtracks while every Master System game sounds like the same thing?

You can only do so much with only a couple of square waves and a noise channel. The NES let you have more tone variation by changing around the duty cycle The NES also had a triangle wave channel and (relatively) simple way to play digital samples.

inb4 someone brings up the c64 and it's filtering tech

Because there are 300 SMS games and well over 1,000 NES games
Because NES games could include extra chips that enhanced the sound capability, while the Mark III's FM sound unit never left Japan
