Wouldn't surprise me at all, everyone wanted to have a magazine in the 90s. You charge $5 for the mag and then sell all the ad space you can whether it be 2 page ads or a classified section. You could basically print money if you even had a humble amount of subscribers. The problem is there are only so many names that get the point across. If it was just called Videogames that's probably because Videogames Monthly and Videogaming Magazine were already taken or too close to a superior product but not close enough that it could fool people into thinking it was the superior product.

I get annoyed that the zoomies here are so dismissive of game mags because they had their brains rotted by watching Gamergate youtube videos when they were 11 years old but Gamepro did have some pretty bad grade inflation.

Gamepro was just the Street Fighter II + Mortal Kombat magazine. Between 1992 to about 1996 almost all of their magazine covers were just those two games. Classics like Super Metroid or Chrono Trigger didn't even get more than a blurb, let alone a cover.
