What is the best Zelda clone or romhack?

I've got the itch for some classic top down retro Zelda but I've played the classics enough that they won't hit.

Zelda games are not technically rpg but it always leaned very close to the other games that are considered rpg. Chicken or the egg, whether Zelda is almost an rpg or if it was influential enough to make rpg games feel sort of like Zelda, thats debatable

Also stats tied to character growth outside of items.
Also finding loot you can choose whether to equip.
Also buying armor and weapons from armor and weapon shops instead of just doing quests to upgrade the only default equipment you ever get and can never remove.
There is so much missing from Zelda if you want to consider it an RPG. It just doesn't have the same feel at all.

Neutopia II in particular feels to me in many ways like the middle ground between the original Zelda and A Link to the Past that Nintendo never made, like Zelda II from a mirror universe.

For sure character stats but I thought it was implied with the missing lvl number. The loots and equipment okay but the core game presentation and experience were very similar to SNES action rpgs. Youre not wrong it isnt an rpg but this parallel even remains true to this day with BotW

Been meaning to ask for a while and I suppose this threads a good opportunity. Outside of Okami are there any good 3d Zedla clones? After beating the series and ending on Skyward Sword (which was a bit of a let down) I really have an itch for one more good 3d Zelda.

This game has amazing graphics and music, entertaining text and a surprisingly good story. The gameplay is just like Zelda with the overhead action-adventure style. You have 3 playable characters and each has their own weapon. I recommend it, although it has a rather long intro sequence that tends to filter most players.

I played through this 15 years ago. Loved it, but I wouldn't call it a substitute for ALttP, due to the lack of overworld exploration and items, which IMO the various pets don't really replace.
The movement is a lot nicer though, since you can walk in eight directions instead of four, and also because you gain the ability to jump (with a dedicated button, even) early on.

I'm gonna be honest, I've played a ton of Zelda ripoffs and none of them grabbed me like regular old Zelda. For top down Zelda likes, this is a stretch because it technically originated around the same time as Zelda, but the Ys games are really good. Everything else is just bland.

You convinced me to try it but by the 5th dungeon I can't take it anymore, the small annoyances just keep piling up

Hitting enemies is also harder than it should be and it just got increasingly worse with the speed boots.

You may or may not like Beyond Oasis on Genesis. It's like Zelda mixed with a Beat 'em Up, more simple on puzzles, more heavy on combat. Great game. The sequel is solid too.

Also unironically, Metal Gear 1, 2 and Ghost Babel if you don't mind pretty much Zelda in a different setting.
