I played DS first and was surprised afterwards by how awful the original actually looked.
It was cool to have a handheld console rivaling the power of n64.

By all accounts those who are fiends for content will prefer the DS version, but in terms of overall feel, it has nothing on the N64 version despite no changes to physics overall besides glitch fixes. Even with an analog hack, it simply just isn't as fluid.

Wrong the physics is different and worse

You can't long jump+wall jump...
The wall jump have been butchered
The levels are smaller too

I've got no idea if there's a SM64 hack that has character swapping with unique abilities, that isn't simply something on the PC ports. But even then, it would require a pretty large rebuild of everything in how the game works given how the DS version shifted quite a bit up.

that's definitely an opinion, anon
the new models are almost objectively an improvement. some of them manage to have more detail with a lower poly count, even. I can understand liking the originals better, though
textures in the original were essentially whatever they found in a bunch of texture cds or with their 3d modeling software, in the new one they are unified and more consistent
colors I can take them or leave them. I can see the argument against the soft pastels, but, again, I think the consistency of the remake makes them look better overall

>the levels are the same

Nope their smaller
Try using triple jump to get to the rotating plateforme in the sky level on both versions ,you will see the difference

> the wall jump is easier to perform actually

That's not a good thing
Much more fun and technical in the original

was mind blowing to get it on a handheld at release and I suffered through the controls and got all 150 stars. minigames were dope too

these days since anything can run 64 theres no reason on earth to ever play it. Its not just the shitty controls and graphical downgrade but having to swap between characters was a terrible idea too. luigi trivializes the whole game except for when you HAVE to switch to other characters for a certain cap star. lame.

DS is flawed by virtue of adding content or changing things for the sake of it.
Yoshi is an alright change of pace, but Luigi is just Better Mario for everything except the wall kick/balloon/wing cap stars, and Wario is Worse Mario unless you need to break black bricks or use the metal cap. It's simply not fun to have to go switch characters/grab a cap for things Mario could just do in the original. Likewise I'm struggling to think of new stars (the ones that were added to the courses) that were interesting.
I did like the new courses (Block Fort, the Island, the character stages) or when they expanded out the existing courses (like the area around Whomp's Fortress though I'm struggling to think of other examples at the moment).
Overall though I just don't think the juice justifies all the extra squeeze. If you have to play one, play the original, but maybe play DS if you're looking to switch things up.

We've already been there. There's been plenty of TP dicksuck threads the last few years. The notion just never sticks because OoT is an inherently better game on every objective basis and most people who play both eventually come to this conclusion.

As much as some of their games deserve to be discussed on this board, I don't agree with the implementation of the DS and PSP into the retro category anymore. The line is too vague. There'd have to be a handpicked and agreed upon list of individual games, which isn't possible to make

Wii will never be retro by design. Waggle is way too much of a casual feature with too many non-game implementations
