You know SHIT about good fighting games if you ever played Mortal Kombat because you liked how it plays.

It's a fun casual game. To reply OP, you check it for the violence, you stay because it's fun even if not as tryhard as le serious fighters

Little of both. It was good mindless fun until Ultimate 3. After that, it started trying to be serious.

The whole youth of ex-USSR played Mortal Kombat for the lore and atmosphere. The games came out simultaneously with VCRs finally becoming affordable and martial arts films being circulated everywhere, creating a once in a lifetime synergy.

For the US it wasn't really martial arts so much as ninjas that took off in the early to mid 90s. Everybody dressed up as Sub-Zero or Scorpion for Halloween.

a core memory of mine is visiting my grandparents when I was 6 or something and seeing my cousin and uncle play this fighting game where you could launch your opponent into a new arena. didn't know what game it was back then.
anyways, although its a core memory of mine the only MK I played was MK4 on pc. not really a fan of fighting games. the kicking your opponent into a new arena and the fatalities are a cool mechanic though.

I play fighting games for violence, pleasure of hitting someone in a video game is enough for me

I play it for everything: art, setting, music, lore, gameplay, FUN etc
Some say the moves are too simple but I like it, never saw the point in SF having 3 different punches and kicks, except to conect a low medium kick into a hadouken or to throw a slower hadouken once in a while
I'm sure all 6 buttons are used by tourneyfags but I personally don't care about learning all that

Gameplay wise I always thought that MK felt really odd and clunky and didn't hold a candle to Capcom and SNK stuff. But the violence, the novelty of the digitized sprites and the whole style of it made it worth playing. They really nailed the presentation (in 1 and 2 anyway, 3 starts to get a little weird).

I literally only played it because my friends wanted to, dunno why they wanted to play it though, probably the violence

I played Mortal Kombat all of one time in '95 or '96. This dipshit from school thought I'd be impressed with the blood and violence, I was not, I had SFII Turbo at home and it plays better.

Mortal Kombat 2 and 3 legitimately play very well. You're just a dumb weaboo shitter.

The core essentials of the original Mortal Kombat games are good enough that it competed with Street Fighter, and all of the MK copy-cats failed miserably, so they clearly lacked the balance and refinement that it had. If you disagree, you're just coping.

You sound awfully insecure and defensive for a "one time thing" that happened 25 years ago. Sounds like you don't think it actually plays better :^)
