DMC1 definitely is a good game and has a lot of strengths over 3 but the fluidity and depth of 3 alone make it a better game. DMC1 is very stiff, it still plays good but everything is stiff and the game is much slower overall, I also believe it to be far more difficult than 3. They are honestly both top tier games and trying to slander 3 just to prop up DMC1 when they are both nearly as good as each other is gay.

My grip with 3 is when enemies turn purple and they just become damage sponges.
DMC1 is also very atmospheric, probably thanks to its RE early development roots.

Yeah DMC has a scary atmosphere and unlike most horror games you know that something is always ready to pop out from the shadows and start clapping your cheeks

Only flaw with 3 is the enemies. There's too many gimmicky enemy types that pose no threat to you and just exist to be annoying. Like the armor guys that die in two hits and the ones that turn invisible.
The midgame missions always drag a bit for me since you spend a lot of time fighting those kind of enemies.

Anyone who thinks DMC1 is better than DMC3 is just a fucking retard, dude. DMC1 feels like an unfinished/rushed mess. The gameplay is barebones AF and the AI is retarded. The story sucks ass. Sometimes missions just end in the middle of a hallway for no reason and shit. You fight 3 or 4 bosses 3 times each, too. It's incredibly repetitive.

DMC3 has one of the best stories in any videogame. Some if the stuff it does recontextualizes DMC1's story, and makes it better, even. The gameplay alone wipes the floor with DMC1. Plus, it has the Bloody Palace and playable Vergil.

Yes, the gothic aesthetic and the marionette enemies are cool, but that doesn't make it a better game than DMC3, you idiots.

They're near completely different games besides some core mechanics and elements shared. It's like trying to fight apples vs. oranges, it's your preference and context that "wins" rather than the individual qualities.

DMC3 can't even decide what it wants to be. DMC1 is built around efficiency and plays like a proper beat'em'up, where you are supposed to kill enemies as quickly as possible. DMC3 wants you style on the enemies, yet like half of them aren’t designed to support such a playstyle. And if you start prioritizing efficiency the game becomes stale very quickly, and tanks your score in addition to that. Every single boss in DMC1 is, at the very least, good, while DMC3 features some atrociously or push over designed fights like gigapede, Arkham, Lady etc. I would also take DMC1 minimalistic story that follows classic metaphysical trope, where a hero descends into darkness to face his fears, over exaggerated epic that is DMC3. And finally, DMC1 soundtrack is way better than DMC3 soundtrack is.
DMC1 is the best game in the series, because of how good it is overall, everything that followed it was a decline in some ways. The only significant drawback of DMC1 is the camera, which in some places is unbelievably shit, I have no idea how the second fight with Gryphon even got past the testing. I’m telling you this as somebody who tried playing the series for the first time somewhere around 2020.

I have to disagree with you on that one, all Nightmare fights are just abysmally bad. And as you've said yourself, Gryphon on the ship is awful. Both phases of Mundus are admittedly not very good but they are serviceable
