Virtua Racing Deluxe has flat shaded textures and doesnโ€™t have analog controls which it sorely needs for playability even though After Burner and Space Harrier both had it.

>Their games performed EXTREMELY well, and were very highly rated by professionals. The audience that purchased them were very satisfied.

>Virtua Racing Deluxe and other 3rd party developing companies just wanted to push push push in every way as fast as possible. Mostly, the games suffered performance and rated poorly.
>Still-shots piqued interest for very brief moments, and then all interest was lost shortly thereafter.

Is anyone here actually familiar with how the rendering pipeline for the N64 works? or is everyone pulling stuff out of their ass?
I'm not, but at the same time, I can tell that the snowman in Frappe Snowland doesn't abide to whatever this image is trying to say, and that the n64 should definitively be able to do proper 3d without any advantages from performance issues.
At most, I can see some CPU logic depending on a pseudo 2.5-behavior, but that's unrelated to rendering.

We have a full decompilation, so we can see exactly how it works.

https://github.com/n64decomp/mk64/blob/master/src/render_objects.c

MK64 does make use of sprites, at least for its characters, so it should be able to avoid some geometry calculations by just copying them to the framebuffer slightly modified, but I suspect the vast majority of the level geometry just goes through the RSP and gets rendered normally, because why the fuck not?

They're both fun games for different reasons and graphics will always remain secondary to gameplay. virtua racing is a mechanically tight grand prix racer and mario kart is a mechanically loose party racer, yet I'd never bust out virtua racing at a party and I'd never play mario kart single player. Each game has their strengths and weaknesses for graphics, and while it's undeniable that the arcade version of virtua racing was graphically superior to everything else at the time, many people enjoy the look of n64 games regardless. fanboys have no meaningful opinions to share as they refuse to enjoy things without their brand of choice attached to it as a point of pride in their otherwise vacuous lives.

Sega were the ones that launched an ad campaign in the US where they directly attacked Nintendo. I don't recall a "Saturn does what Platstationdon't" ad campaign.

Also Microsoft? SEGA had already killed off the Dreamcast and left the console market before the Xbox even launched.

that file seems to be about the hud and other billboard (2d) objects.
but if we see in camera.c we find several mentions of

MK64 runs really well on the system, but the levels feel flat and boring indeed. Pic related is the absolute best N64 racer. Huge tracks, tons of verticality, satisfying physics, detailed damage models, and customizable cars. Going full 3D is so much worth it even if it sacrifices some of your framerate.

That's basically irrelevant, since most games almost never have any reason to rotate the camera z-axis, save for doing things like showing a character "shaking their head" or leaning from a first person perspective. The camera liberally rotates around the x and y axis.

Which fucking professionals were these? Everyone involved in gaming in the 80s and 90s considered Nintendos slop to be garbage for technically incompetent rich kids. All the kids who were into games were writing their own or pirating them while fat vegatbles with divorcing and guilty parents were buying the future troons and pedos SN/ES and N64. Nintendo won almost no awards like the golden joystick in the 80s in fact the first time they won anything was 1992 and then went into obilbion again under the PC and PS1/PS2 for 15 years https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Joystick_Awards

i get what you mean. i should have explained a little better since my logic was flawed.
what i meant by z axis was the same as looking up or down by rotating your head.
in contrast of moving your head up and down, that would be the y axis.
but then we have x axis by itself, hence the flaw.

What are you even talking about? Anyone who's played this game knows that not all its "lines" are perfectly vertical, plus all its courses are 3D models which can be deformed and edited in your typical programs like Blender, not to mention the custom courses people make for it which also aren't limited by perfectly straight lines.

If it doesn't have infinitely tall actors, it's 3D, not 2.5D. If you don't know what infinitely tall actors means, you probably shouldn't be discussing this topic.
Or to put it another way, lots of these engines take shortcuts with the Z or Y axis and don't calculate it as accurately as modern engines do or use some extremely small range of ints in an array leading to poor vertical collision detection. None of these things make the engine not 3D. And if we're being real no Z coords on PS1 are accurate ever unless the bloody moons of venus align properly before you hit the screenshot button.

Are you sure you don't mean the lack of z-buffer? It's a different matter from coords. On PS1 X, Y and Z coords are equally inaccurate

Hmmmmmm I wonder what those chips could be...
Let's see....

>HD74HC139P
>Manufacturer: Hitachi Semiconductor.
>Description: Dual 2-to-4-line Decoders/Demultiplexers.

I wonder what that could be for? Let's check the source of your image:
https://gendev.spritesmind.net/mirrors/www.nepereny.com/misc2/games/parts/171-6885A.htm
It appears Sega just used 2 ROMs on any game over a certain size with a demultiplexer because big ROMs ain't cheap.

And now... Drum roll please...

Sega fans tended to get gas lit after the Dreamcast failed even in popular places like IGN. Stuff like saying Sega owners just played the same 4 games while Nintendo had a smorgasbord, it reality it closer to the opposite. Sega fans accepted that their consoles failed but still enjoyed them while Nintendo fans just couldn't accept that the N64 and Gamecube failed. I don't mind criticizing Sega, just don't make up things to make a juicier story, stuff like saying the Master System has nothing on the level of Mario 3, you can tell these people never bothered to explore the system. Another part is normies with journalist degrees writing about retro gaming that they know nothing about, saying stuff like Sonic was never good or even saying that about Bubsy.
I'm not but hurt, I even typically like Snes music better. I think the Virtual Boy was another system unfairly treated by the media, its actually a really good system.
I don't care that much if Snes of Genesis is better because other systems from the time like X68000 and FM Towns were even better that you can emulate, they both had be cut down to be affordable.
