>$400 for a CD player + Genesis in 1994
>Genesis functionality completely useless on the go and makes it a far more likely target for thieves
>If you lose your portable CD player, you lose your Genesis
Why the actual fuck does this exist?

Streamlining the Genesis.
So you can listen to your favourite Sonic soundtrack on your bike when you travel to your friend's house to play Streets of Rage together.

It's a Sega CDX. It was for rental stores. Nobody used it as a portable CD player out in public like on a bus.

>Why the actual fuck does this exist?
>"Hey Bob, I got an idea. People like the Genesis and people like the Sega CD right?"
>"What if we put both systems together and sold it? We could even take advantage of the CD tray and market it as a multimedia player."
>"Kevin you're usually coming up with retarded ideas but that one might actually make money."
TL;DR It exists for the same reason why the Twin Famicom exists. It's supposed to be convenient.

I don't think I've heard of anyone who used the CDX as a diskman ever, there's no anti skip and it's very bulky. The only practical use would be in a Hi-Fi setup, in which case there's zero need for batteries and far better consoles to choose from such as a Playstation, Saturn (my personal favorite), or Jaguar CD (my wife's favorite due to the VLM)

Yes. The room you are in is entirely full of iphone babies.
tbf, this could be a "Their eyes met across a crowded room. They were the only ones in the room" moment.

Takes up less space than the Genesis+CD combo and only takes up one power outlet. Also accomodates the Power Base Converter so it can play Master System games too.

Would've been a selling point on its own.
