Miles Prower is such a better name than Tails. Why didn't they keep it? Its not like they changed any other names as the series went on to my knowledge.

Because only his original creator insisted on Miles Prower for the pun on "miles per hour", while Sega just wanted something simple and easy to market. Making Tails his nickname was the compromise.

It's a cute pun, which doesn't mean it's a good name per se or makes it roll off the tongue well as a good cartoon character/mascot name should.

One weakness of punny names is that they mostly work better written than they do in speech, unless the components are common enough to instantly recognize the pun in spoken form anyway. "Prower" isn't too obscure but still if some kid on average heard the name back in the day for the first time they's simply assume the name IS "Miles Per Hour"
