ITT, post games referencing other games not made by the same company, whether as a homage or as a joke or dig.

So Zelda 3 was considered so irrelevant that they put it under Yoshi?

Yoshi's Island was more recent, having come out just a few months before DKC2.

It means they (meaning Sonic and EWJ) suck so much they had "no hope" of even competing against the other Video Game Heroes.

It's peculiar how Sierra games consistently outperformed the LucasArts library in terms of sales (and by a HUGE margin) but still acted somewhat gracelessly butthurt about them and their smug "game design philosophy"

In hindsight though, they may have predicted how the Lucas adventure games would become more iconic and fondly remembered overall while Sierra's would come to mainly represent the genre's least popular traits.

It's a diss towards Sonic and Earthworm Jim, implying that they don't have any hope of competing with Nintendo's game characters.

Everyone used to do this in the 90s after Sonic/Sega went after Mario/Nintendo.

As much as I liked EWJ as a kid, I personally didn't ever consider it would be regarded as being on the same tier as the Nintendo/Rare platformers, so the "dig" was kinda weird and basically counterproductive as it basically acknowledged how they DID consider it a challenger somehow lol

Zelda wouldn't be considered an A-list franchise like Mario until Ocarina of Time. That said, the GBA port moves Link up to 2nd place.

OoT was still in the distant horizon; it's weird to think about it now, but at the time Zelda was well respected but ultimately not yet the huge flagship that it would become

I can't agree there, Zelda was definitely one of Nintendo's biggest franchises even before Ocarina of Time.

I don't get why IF they obviously wanted to take a jab at Mario they would not also use the real hat with the M.
Considering how in the ad they act so superior I always saw that as wussy. Either do it fully or don't do it AT ALL.

It's likely a trademarked symbol since Mario's hat has been released separately as its own merchandise item by Nintendo.

In the NES and SNES days, Nintendo's priority with their fledgling franchises were pretty much, in order:
>Mario
>Mario-adjacent (Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Wario)
>Everything else that's not Mario
Zelda was one of the bigger non-Mario franchises, but it still wasn't on Mario's level until OoT.

Yep. The vast majority of people who played DKC2 were thinking "who's that girl standing next to Mario?" upon reaching that screen. There was very little awareness of Zelda back then.

Yea that’s simply not true. I was familiar with LoZ and growing up everyone around me was too. We had a Genesis the next gen and still knew about Lttp and that shit blew our minds when we saw it. Also, you can just go look at best sellers where alttp sits at 4.5 million copies sold for 7th place. Obviously SMW and All stars have a way higher sell count but as far as I know both of those were packin titles as well so that would boost their sales significantly. But yeah, everyone was aware of lttp if you were reading literally any gaming magazine or had talked to any kid at school with a copy (which may be hard for some people on here so I get maybe their bubble was really small and that’s why they feel Zelda wasn’t already a juggernaut for Nintendo) you knew about Zelda.
Anonymous No.11929185 [Report]
There's been a retroactive push to claim LttP was a boring game that nobody played or liked.

>Lucas adventure games would become more iconic
Indeed.
I've never played Loom or even seen a box of it in a store much less watched a video of its gameplay so the fact that I recognise what that's lampooning proves just how iconic it is

I've never heard the term "hoper" before, or even after honestly. By "no hopers" are they even saying that they don't want anyone who is a "hoper" or that the ones who were no hopers are getting tossed into that corner?

(Also, come to think of it, Nintendo tends to not really do things like that do they? Were there any other 1st party Nintendo games that mocked others like that before?)

>>11928768
>In hindsight though, they may have predicted how the Lucas adventure games would become more iconic and fondly remembered overall while Sierra's would come to mainly represent the genre's least popular traits.
I think it was either just the devs making a parody that they thought would be funny, or good natured ribbing of a rival. I don't think they were really "butthurt' about it, and definitely not that they somehow predicted LucasArts games would be more remembered.

That being said though, their design philosophy did suck, namely how you can get softlocked hours ago without even realizing it and continue both playing and saving your game for hours after until you can't get any further and would have no idea why. Or just plain trolling the player like that tire nonsense in Police Quest.

>>11928962
This, the fact that it's more of a weird bent shape than an N even makes me think it was an M originally but they had to photoshop it after being told they could not do that.

>>11929024
Yes. They were also planning to add many such cameos in the bean cafe thing in Mario & Luigi but despite the sprites and dialog text being on the ROM they were ultimately removed.

>>11929039
Zelda had a freaking cartoon alongside Mario. He might not have been as big as Mario, but Zelda was still popular even back then.

>>11929052
It's a shame you would have only gotten to see that cool (at the time) 3D sprite of Link if you somehow both managed to beat the game AND also sucked at it.

They were supervised by Nintendo, but Rare was still western, they liked to stir shit and banter about.
Also, despite being a jab, these 3D renders of Sonic's shoes and Jim's gun are so good. Also the trash bin is said to be a reference to Boogerman, not sure about that

In English, it's common to take a word or phrase and add -er to it to turn it into a descriptive noun, usually to describe someone who performs a specific action or role. The whole point is, as has been stated ITT, that it's a dig at competing platforming game characters, and the idea here is to indicate that they have "no hope" of competing, but "blokes who have no hope" is too long and not at all pithy, so just take the phrase "no hope", add -er to it, and there's a perfectly serviceable descriptive noun.

IIRC the nip version, and all versions from the PS1 remake onward, references Link instead. Would've been funny if Enix then took >>11928262 and made a FF reference to complete the triangle.

Rugal in KOF 94 has dead SF characters as statues. This is also why he has a special intro with Guile in CVS2.
