I've never heard the term "hoper" before, or even after honestly. By "no hopers" are they even saying that they don't want anyone who is a "hoper" or that the ones who were no hopers are getting tossed into that corner?
(Also, come to think of it, Nintendo tends to not really do things like that do they? Were there any other 1st party Nintendo games that mocked others like that before?)

>In hindsight though, they may have predicted how the Lucas adventure games would become more iconic and fondly remembered overall while Sierra's would come to mainly represent the genre's least popular traits.
I think it was either just the devs making a parody that they thought would be funny, or good natured ribbing of a rival. I don't think they were really "butthurt' about it, and definitely not that they somehow predicted LucasArts games would be more remembered.
That being said though, their design philosophy did suck, namely how you can get softlocked hours ago without even realizing it and continue both playing and saving your game for hours after until you can't get any further and would have no idea why. Or just plain trolling the player like that tire nonsense in Police Quest.

This, the fact that it's more of a weird bent shape than an N even makes me think it was an M originally but they had to photoshop it after being told they could not do that.

Yes. They were also planning to add many such cameos in the bean cafe thing in Mario & Luigi but despite the sprites and dialog text being on the ROM they were ultimately removed.

Zelda had a freaking cartoon alongside Mario. He might not have been as big as Mario, but Zelda was still popular even back then.

It's a shame you would have only gotten to see that cool (at the time) 3D sprite of Link if you somehow both managed to beat the game AND also sucked at it.
