It's a fun game with sort of an inverted difficulty curve that seriously overstays its welcome. Zigzagging across paths that look identical and tons of backtracking. Random encounters with enemies that take several minutes to defeat. Animations that are great but take ages. Post game content that will seem really cool except that at least one part of it seems specifically designed to piss you off.

The main reason I want to play this is because the princess has pattsun.

A metric fuck-ton of walking to the left or right and getting into random battles. Said battles are fun and the story is pretty good for what it is so it's worth it. Even the item cooking system is surprisingly fun to get into.
If there's anything I don't like it's that they give you an awesome second form to play as only to have the game end immediately after.
I found it more enjoyable than Odin Sphere, its successor, anyway.

A mediocre experience, not terrible but not great either. Before the fan translation drama, it was mostly known for being a massive flop for ATLUS and almost led to the director getting blacklisted from the japanese video game industry because of it.

Some fag claimed to be working on it for over a decade and refused to release anything.
Someone else downloaded an old fork of it off github that was publicly available for a time and finished it and released it. The original guy and a few of his sycophants got incredibly butthurt about this. There was an ESL tranny translating the new script and changing shit but xhe was replaced.

That was their idea of an "uncencored" translation that they loved to boast about, blindly translating every instance of the word "kuso" to "shit" regardless of context, and claimed that easmaster's version was "cencored" when they were fired over this nonsense of just trying to make the translation look like a child that had just learned some swear words.

Correct, CyberWarriorX originally was keeping the project as open source on Github under a GPL license, and clearly had no idea what open source and especially GPL meant, acting like it was "stolen" (His words... repeatedly) because eadmaster... had downloaded and forked the repo. Did the typical comes out of disappearing just to whine on every site possible, claim it's stolen work, demand it be taken down, post a video that could be years old claiming it was still being worked on, only to then disappear again.

Technically it's at 1.0 and despite getting frequent updates before has not had updates since hitting 1.0 so far, but eadmaster claims he still wants to fix up some stuff later, and work on porting the translation to the PSP version.

Correction. There was some recent beta releases of some minor bugs, but he says he still recommends 1.0 over the betas for now.

I and many others definitely knew about it before then, it was very visually stunning for it's time, and more people knew about it once Vanillaware games started coming out in the US like Odin Sphere, that was also very visually stunning for a PS2 game.

The artist is... known for this, and still does it to this day. Check out the Sorceresses from Dragon's Crown, a PS3/PS4 game.
