>Try to keep things /vr/ related: Focus should be on 6th Gen Consoles and older. Slight off topic is fine so long as it's related to CRTs, such as later 16:9 models, HD models, etc. Systems with backwards compatibility are also safe territory, as are re-releases on newer hardware. PC CRTs are also welcome and appreciated.
>Produce OC! Bust out your camera and take photos of your CRTs displaying all sorts of games, featuring all sorts of tubes, using all sorts of signals. Getting good shots can be hard, but if you take enough, at least a few will turn out alright.
>Try and give as much information as possible when asking for info on a specific set, or troubleshooting an issue to expedite and help you may receive. As always, Google is your friend and we are your friends with benefits. Do people read this? Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either; Seriously, there's literally 6 years of backlog at this point.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. Always remember to show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Limited discussion of video processing and scaling devices is alright, but remember to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories.

It's not hard to find CRTs in the US. They're on the side of the road on bulk pick up nights, in thrift stores, retro game stores sell them for reasonable prices and facebook market is full of them. Just because someone is asking for $500 doesn't mean anyone is paying it for a 250lb burden with melted plastic.

If you have reason to suspect a CRT has been rained on or is in some way filthy, clean it. Let it dry. I picked one up a day after it rained on, removed the boards, soldered on a new power cable and it worked perfectly. Even the built in VCR.

- CRTs are no longer produced because they have inferior picture quality versus LCDs
- CRTs emit dangerous levels of X-rays or other forms of radiation
- CRTs always have easily-visible flicker
- CRTs always cause eyestrain
- CRTs always make a high-pitched squealing noise
- CRTs contain lethal amounts of electricity, even when unplugged
- CRTs need calibration more than two to three times a year
- Overall CRT black levels are not superior to LCDs because ambient light ruins CRT black levels
- Analog CRTs have more processing time than digital LCDs due to poor RAMDAC performance
- Afterimages caused by phosphor decay are extremely annoying and are a significant downside of CRTs
- Sending an improper mode (resolution or refresh rate) to a CRT can cause permanent damage
- CRTs cannot have touchscreens
- 4:3 is so bad that nobody should use a non-widescreen CRT
- The Sony GDM-FW900 is the only CRT worth owning
- Curved CRTs have objectively inferior picture quality versus flat CRTs with otherwise equal specifications
- CRTs should not be used because they are heavier and deeper than LCDs
- CRTs have severe reflections because they do not have matte coats
- CRTs can be permanently damaged by nearby magnets
- Analog signals limit a CRT's resolutions and refresh rates and negatively effect picture quality
- Heavy metals are used in CRT glass to reduce radiation

CANCER RAY TUBES should be ILLEGAL

I've got this one for free yesterday. A 25" trinitron with scart rgb.
I might try playing SH2-3 on composhit though, maybe it'll look better (I don't have an RGB cable on me right now).
Geometry on it is a bit warped, since it's a flatscreen, and the remote seemingly died, so idk if I'll be able to access the service menu, but unlike that 32" thomson I might not even need it here.

LOL no. It's not 2009 anymore. Thrift stores basically never have them because they're on lockdown as soon as they get them in, then they put them on Ebay.
>retro game stores
Nope. Not anymore. All done eaten up by collectors.

Glad I got mine on the side of a road one fine spring back in....2011? Got lucky looking back on it, as I missed out on much of the rush to get rid of those things when LED HD came into its own.

That is a misleading price. They tack on milage costs and you need to refill the gas tank when you are done. They also usually require a deposit down way over the claimed amount so that they can charge you for things like dings or cratches. You can rent a truck for under a 100, but its blatant BS that you will only be paying 20.

Well then home depot is unique then because every other truck/van rental service charges you per mile as well. I do know from trying to rent from them in the past that its first come, first serve and they wont let you reserve a vehicle days in advance, unless that also varies by region. Most locations only have 1 truck available too, maybe 2 at most.

In my experience of liberating them from techno-genocide, they stay out for weeks at a time at the side of the drop off zone, awaiting the recycler reaper. If you feel the need to be honest, you can ask the dock worker dopes, and sometimes they wont know protocols and just let you take them, while others are strict on the policy of absolutely anything dropped off can not leave. Goodwill is the GameStop of thrift stores, so they are not exactly morally righteous to begin with.

Ive personally never seen a goodwill donation area with cameras, and in the off hours, they bring everything movable they plan to sell/go through inside. Furniture and tvs sit outside. Furthermore, i highly, highly doubt they will raise a stink over it. The dock workers probably wont even notice and the police are extremely likely to not get involved over a trash tv taken from behind a store that was left purposely unattended outside overnight. I've personally taken 10 sets this past year from the same location.

Nice booty, stranger. For me, I want several smaller ones, like 13" and maybe four 19" ones. Don't care what brand.
Not like I don't have a few of my own, but I gots my reasons.

And yeah rear projection TVs are pure crap. No good for anything except disappointment.
Bad for games, (do they even work with light guns?) horrible for films.

I got some lil ones from there also, like these two. In fact, this little sylvania vcr one was the first one i found on a pile of them when i discovered goodwill takes them again, and when i asked a dock worker, he said i could take them, so I grabbed that one on the way back to my car. When i came back an hour later for the rest, thats when a different doofus was there and denied me taking them under the rule of "once its dropped off, nothing can leave".

I should probably just move on, but I'm not loving how opportunists are rationalizing that any CRT they see not guarded like Fort Knox is up for grabs. that's how my 27" Trinitron and Sylvania got stolen last year.
fuck those twerps and their backs.

I am thinking of buying a cheap, below 19" crt. I already found a 14" Philips for 20 yurobucks.
I read the pastebin but I still don't get it, if I get a tv with a scart in, can I just use a component cable with a scart adaptor to get the highest video quality or what?

No that won't work. You need a TV with component input, or a transcoder device. But if you are in Europe, there's barely any reason to care about component. Every console that offers component in Europe has RGB scart available on aliexpress

Okay so you get a specific cable for that, here we used to get shitty composite cables with a scart adaptor in the console box.

i have an old Emerson taking up space in my closet, only retro consoles i have is a Wii (the model that plays gamecube games) and one of those old genesis plug and play pieces of junk that someone gifted me one year. i emulate alot on my pc and steam deck and was thinking of getting some cables to hook one of them up to it for a more authentic look, since i dont think ill be picking up any retro consoles anytime soon

if you want to play 8 and 16 bit stuff just use the wii. you can get hdmi-to-composite adapters but it will introduce lag

Nta, but the lag can be overcome with engaging gaming mode, if the TV supports it.

that's a modern flat panel setting, and even so, it has nothing to with the lag inherent to video signal conversion

SCART has a shitload of pins. One of them is for composite video, which is why such composite adapters were possible - component is a completely different standard

Hey anons, pls help. It's the thomson guy, I tried fixing some geometry issues and found out that no matter what I do, the image is still a trapezoid with the left part of the screen being visibly stretched compared to the right one. Does it mean the tube is misaligned or anything? What can I do to fix it?

That's what I did, also mine was a clone, and they typically list the supported models.
Might also depend on the chassis, if they're the same, I think you're good.

It does because modern TVs automatically upscale the image thus introducing lag.
