they required it. many games utilized the ram expansion if it was present.

Perfect Dark required the expansion pack to play 80% of the game or so. Very few games required it exclusively. Lots of games supported it for 'high res' mode options.

In some some cases the increase in resolution caused games to run slower. Turok 2 being a good example.

Yes but you had the choice not to turn on the high res mode to keep the performance the same. The only game negatively affected by the expansion pak is some revisions of Space Station Sillicon Valley that will crash without the original jumper pak.

the expansion pak is literally one of the worst things to happen to the nintendo 64 collectors, because theres much fewer expansions than consoles, so with flashcarts available, these things will eventually cost 100-200USD to buy one.
