Sonic 3D Blast might be the most popular example, especially the Director's Cut, but definitely worth checking out for those that enjoy this genre, the DX patch is my favorite.

Sonic 3D Blast was the first and last time I trusted "3D" in the title of anything to actually mean 3D polygonal graphics. I was so fucking sad when I rented this as a kid and it was just a 2D platformer with shit controls.

The game has movement across the x,y and z axes when you factor in slopes, jumping and differing elevation that's full 3D as far as the game logic is concerned. More 3D than Doom anyways
