Why is Yu-Gi-Oh not hip with the kids these days like Pokémon? The former has faded into irrelevancy, while the latter is still going strong.

Bullshit power creep and the creator's death. There was a time Thousand-Eyes Restrict was the single-most complicated card in the game and prior to that there was a time Gemini Elf was a straight-up GG.

Pokemon continually hands its fanbase what they want, but covered in slop, while YGO just went straight slop.

Yugioh is a rule lawyer game. Gives some nice interactions, but it's a massive barrier to kids. None the less you don't really get many turns unlike old Yugioh. Either someone's starting hand does something and wins, or people just have a bad time.

This.

Now every card interacts with the whole deck and combos are 10 minutes long... it sucks.

Gemini Elf got released in English the set after Thousand-Eyes Restrict.

Also, why would a 1900 beater be GG? Trap Hole, Fissure, Man-Eater Bug, 2K Defenders; there were plenty of ways to deal with a vanilla beater.

No good tv show is going to be the biggest reason though. The original show was cool and we wanted to do the cool things we saw happen in the show.

also equips, the main reason that elf was so good was that your elf + nuzzler could beat over skull, while your la jinn/fish/harpbro + nuzzler didn't. forget the fact that axe was cheaper than elf, you're running 3 axe, 3 nuzzler 3 la jinn and 3 elf, shh

I stopped watching it the moment GX was released. Why do Japanese people feel the need to swap out beloved characters?

The 2016 movie was kino.

GX had a lot of potential
it had a lot of really cool characters and plots that could have been done in a serious way but they took the easy way out and were content making slop
and kenn is a drama queen even though this series put him on the map

without the cartoon beamed at them, there's nothing to make it more appealing than the real deal

Yugioh market has cratered compared to the Pokemon market. Konami dropped too many starlight // quarter century rares that it’s eaten the market from the inside. Remember that currently, at least half of the people “into” Pokemon now are simply trying to flip the cards.

First, many franchises from back then would be lucky to still be relevant like Yu-Gi-Oh is. Second, it's mostly a card game. Pokemon is a bigger franchise than that. People are attached to Pikachu and other pokemon from back then in the form of merchandise, cartoons, different styles of games with different gameplay like Mystery Dungeon, Snap, Smash Bros, the TCG and others. If you're a big fan of Charizard for example you're still being pandered to and had many ways throughout of the years to be a Charizad fan through many avenues. Even for less popular pokemon and characters, many are still relevant in recent games or anime. But whatever used to be your favorite Yu-Gi-Oh card back in the day is probably long forgotten by now and all your ever had was an anime, a manga and card games.
Anonymous No.11979012 [Report]
>>11977125 (OP)
Because Yu-Gi-Oh! lived and died with its original manga and the anime adapting it. The game itself is very flawed since its cards are designed to make interesting moments in the manga, and it didn't have more established rules until Konami asked Takahashi to make more concise rules so that they could adapt it into a video game and later a card game. The fact that the card game is based on the video game rules is extra aids cause you have nonsensical rules like "missed timings" that only exist to keep the old games from bricking themselves in certain interactions.

iirc ygo is still one of the most popular card games, if not number 1. It is poorly designed though adn the devs have no idea what they're doing beyond steady powercreep. They also completely gave up on videos games outside of dueling simulators

The cards in particular? Because YGO doesn't have the same degree of YouTube presence associated with it. Pokemon card YouTubers managed to get a whole generation of kids addicted to gambling by way of Pokemon. You have men in their thirties screaming about opening thousand dollar sealed vintage packs, pulling a bunch of nearly worthless cards which MAY actually be worth hundreds or thousands a piece... if the PSA grader is having a good day and bestows it a score of 10 (adding another layer of gambling on top of the classic pack opening gamble).
Shit's gotten so out of control that you have people fighting over cards at retailers, and even fucking GameStop is acting as a submission drop off for PSA card grading, not to mention selling their own mystery packs with graded cards.
As for the franchise itself, Pokemon has a wider range of game types, more iconic designs, and somehow manages to make itself a fad again every few years, like with Pokemon Go.

It's a shame because Master Duel looks great in motion, the engine is great, having that in a proper campaign with a story and duels that feel like they mean something, with stakes within a story, would be great. We need Nitemare to come back to Yu-Gi-Oh!

that's because people who buy yugioh are buying to play the damn game. with pokemon, it's just a way to make simple investments.

>Why is Yu-Gi-Oh not hip with the kids these days like Pokémon?
modern yugioh is cancer with no real way to fix it without alienating the core base that actually still plays the game and there's no casual format that people actually care about to draw new blood in.

also the TCG tends to attract the worst kinda people. not as bad as 40K players but more so the kind of people you'd expect yugi to penalty game fuck out of in the pre-DM era.

>>11977797
yugioh as a series peaked with battle city imo. everything after it outside of 5DS & DSOD was trash.

>>11980482
as someone who gave modern yugioh a chance i never thought it was that complicated. my problem came from it being too automated. i've joked about it a couple of times that you could probably train an AI (or a monkey) on the top/best meta deck and (barring sudden rule changes) could likely make top 8 at a YCS.

As I mentioned earlier, even GameStop has gotten involved with the graded cards grift. If that's not a sure sign that the market is fully saturated and on the cusp of collapse, I don't know what is. Sure, some of the old stalwarts will probably maintain some amount of value, but meme cards from the past couple of years which already sell for thousands are almost guaranteed to dip. Grading company subjectivity has become so inextricably linked to the whole ordeal that the difference between your card being relatively worthless and selling for four figures+ can hinge on the mood of whoever is doing the grading.

Kitchen table isn't real ygo. Game was always bull, draw 2, circle 3, make your discard 2, etc.

Most played retro format is Edison. Modern sucks because 20 years of non rotating text blocks that live and die on its legacy support, so yeah be ready to speed read a short story every duel

I get kinda sad when I beat the game and there’s just nothing to do. No more duels. It’s still peak though but fuck I wish there was more
Anonymous No.11983172 [Report]
If you haven't beat DOTR Redux, try it. I was actually struggling with the final boss.

I'm seriously considering creating an AI (not LLM slop) to play against. I'm not sure how well I could do it, but I'd certainly be able to do a better job than Konami did with their "AI has 20 cards in their hand" bullshit.

>>11977167
Magic the gathering does rules lawyering really well; the way they write the cards is a formalized subset of english. The interactions can be reasoned about and an experienced player can reason their way to how things work.

In YGO, what's printed on the card may not even matter. Errata is so deep that you cannot play the game without this "case law" knowledge.

Torishima's loyal lackey and Toriyama's close pal was too busy turning the Yu-Gi-Oh anime into a total kodomo baby show even before the creator died.
Their latest projects looks promising since Iyoku's not working at SHITeisha anymore and Konami wanting to explore more about the cards itself on top of nostalgiafagging (which is totally necessary atm)

I don't know shit about Yu-Gi-Oh aside surface level knowledge like people hating newer and broken stuff like the XYZ shit.

Pokemon made a deal with the devil and prioritize everything that wasn't kosher to merchandise sales and underpayed jap animators.
Same thing with competitive because they need some autists that talk about the gameplay and strats, so they're preserving it's competitive as much as they could instead of going full Sakurai and disregard the tourneyfags.

Pokemon is currently on a panic mode though, they realize they can't change up the boring ass formula more without making purists mad. That's why they made companion titles like Champions and the Legends series as experiments on keeping the pillars separated.
Also they recently got rid of Ash because he wasn't bringing viewership anymore and couldn't keep around the loser gayboy friend of his, instead of actually doing something new, we get Ash again but loli pervert bait and browner Ash 2.0. The anime series is still underperforming and they cancelled yet another movie (this is why we don't have mysticals anymore btw lol)
