Sega Saturn
I'm having such a great time going through the Saturn's library. What have you guys been playing? Checked out any of the recent translations that have been dropping like leaves in autumn lately?

I feel like I've never spent a lot of time on any one Saturn game (aside from Sonic Jam, I guess, but that's obviously not down to its value as something specific to the Saturn). The system just doesn't seem to have any games in genres I enjoy that also lend themselves to being tentpoles I can put days of my life into. Street Fighter Collection, I suppose, but that's just a fighting game. The ceiling of what there is to discover is hit pretty fast and any time you spend playing after that point is just to see how well you can do.

Legend of Oasis uses a lot of FM sound effects that sound like something out of a broken Genesis emulator. It also has very subtle eerie music that almost never plays.

See the problem isn't that Saturn emulation is junk, it's that most Saturn games are junk and people have a hard time believing the games were this bad.

I've started playing Grandia and I'm loving it. The world is beautiful and full of soul and I never get tired of talking to every NPC to see what they got to say even though I usually do in most RPGs. The combat is very dynamic too and the game system allows to customize (though so far I've been going with doing a bit of everything but I feel like I should start to specialize at a single weapon per character soon), combat isn't hard but I've reached a point where you can get your shit pushed in if you don't play well and are not careful, I tried grinding against some self replicating red slimes and I ended up getting Feena killed.

Considering this is the first strategy RPG I've ever played, they're alright. I'm at Chapter 7 of 10, and it's never taken me more than 2 tries to get past a battle. As long as you put even some level of thought into which mech you want where and don't just throw everyone into the fray at once, they won't cause you much trouble. Keeping your team rizzed up also helps because it buffs your stats. Admittedly though, battles can take a long ass time since you move on a grid, and you have to watch every move you and the enemy make in real time. You can hold the action button (or press the middle button on the mouse) to make them move faster, but it still means that if you do have to redo a fight, it can take a while.

I haven't played many but I don't think anything can surpass Shining the Holy Ark for me. It's basically Dragon Quest gameplay but in a first person dungeon crawler (with an automap), the combat is engaging and can be challenging (for a 5th gen JRPG), great art and music, some fun puzzles to solve in the dungeons, and a story which has a second level of reading I wasn't expecting

3D controllers are expensive, so that's not a bad deal if everything still works. You can play burnt CD-Rs with a "4-in-1 Cart" or Action Replay flashed with Pseudo Saturn Kai. Or you can use some kind of ODE to skip the drive and load games from MicroSD.

Saroo is a cart based ODE that goes in the top slot ala a flash cart. Running games this way is somewhat difficult, so compatibility without the firmware patching your games is virtually non-existant. With the built-in patching system, compatibility is about 80% of the Saturn library.

Fenrir Duo/Fenrir Lite are more traditional ODEs that completely replace the disk drive. While this sounds difficult, it really isn't, as the Sega Saturn disk drive is not screwed down but instead pressure mounted on 4 posts. There used to be multiple models for different Saturns, but the current model supports both pin layouts. Pretty much the easiest hardware mod you'll ever install. Used to be expensive, is currently cheap due to being cloned. Supposedly a new version will make it obsolete soon.
Some guys on AliExpress sell Fenrir Duo clones that work as long as you don't try to update them. They also sell something called a Fenrir Pro that gives you a physical switch on the CD Drive bypass instead of removing it entirely. It looks pretty cool, but I don't know if anyone from here has actually tried it, and the install can be complicated on some Saturn models.

Fenrir and all its clones have 100% compatibility minus a few niche software programs that require hotswapping disks, all the multidisk GAMES work fine. There are a few other ODEs and Pseudo Saturn carts, like Satiator, Phoebe, Rhea, and MODE, but they're all either too expensive or never on sale for people to recommend them most of the time.

My top 5 Saturn games, in order:
1. Taromaru
2. Magical Knight Rayearth
3. Panzer Dragoon Saga
4. Elevator Action Returns
5. Willy Wombat
Honorable mentions:
DragonForce (but the flee mechanic is gay)
Shinobi Legions (actually pretty fun but movement can be a bit stiff and some sections of the game are a bit bullshit... Fuck that Minecraft level)

I'm wondering where Legend of Oasis, Dynamite Cop 2 and Die Hard Arcade fit into the above list. I haven't played them yet.

You charge your attack by holding a button, or you rapid fire to fire off shots. A reticle homes in on an enemy close to you (can be a bit temperamental) and you can change enemies selected by pressing L or R. Once locked on to an enemy, it won't change unless you move out of its range or it moves out of your range. You can move around the screen while attacking and charging attacks. Charged attacks chain from one enemy to the next and they do more damage.

It's very fun. Extremely soulful.

Yeah I have two big problems with it:
1. The gameplay is very slow
2. The final part of the game requires you to have all heroes at a strong level, and if you haven't been levelling all of them, because who gives a shit? Then you're fucked and have to grind levels for a while. V annoying.

The single player is pretty fun. I had to restart twice because of getting a game over later on in the game at which point continuing without upgrades felt hopeless, but once I got the hang of it I easily beat the game after that. The final boss is pretty simple once you realize you should stay behind his back at the top of the screen

Thought it was meh on my first playthrough. Unique for sure but nothing mind blowing. Then months later I found out I missed out on the final stage because I just powered through and didn't do well enough on the stages(need at least C's). So I replayed it with getting better grades in mind and that changed everything. Beat the entire game then went back and played again until I got A's on all the dreams. Went from a unique 6.5/10 to an amazing 11/10. I get why it wasn't a system pusher like they wanted but it's absolutely a great experience if you give it a fair chance.

Absolutely. Certain paths give you more points which is essential(along with your shoot down rate) for better dragon evolutions. The only (semi)disappointing thing was the ultimate form Blue dragon(same dragon from PD1) which is the hardest to get wasn't much an upgrade and I preferred the other top tier dragons over it. All in all it gave me replay value which made me better at it which led me to enjoy it more.

Saturn library is definitely worth checking out but is very pricey if you do not want to emulate. In which case I would try to pick up jp versions of titles as many of them hardly have a language barrier(many cases are still mostly in English) and are waaaay cheaper than stateside versions.

No. Merely having """a real Saturn Mk2 controller""" doesn't magically endow anyone with the knowledge of how it's """supposed to be""" or the ability to communicate.

No perma deaths no except in a few rare cases where you let a character die before he's recruited. Your actions can determine which characters join or not and there are a lot of missables, sometimes an action on a disc can determine if a character joins or not in another disc. You don't really need to recruit everyone though, I went in blind for disc 2 and 3 and missed many characters and still had plenty of choices.

Only tip I have is that afaik there is basically no reason not to promote as soon as you can in 3, unlike in 1 and 2 in which waiting can mean better stats.

I've started playing Tengai Makyou IV. Love the presentation but the combat is stupid easy so far, I've only played the first game and it had good balancing so I'm hoping this one will pick up after a while but I don't have my hopes too up when it comes to RPGs balancing from that era.
I should probably just have played 2 and 3 on PC-E instead but I got attracted by the graphics in 4.

Fantastic game. Enjoy.
PSP port is better in ways that I don't remember why. Probably load times. I think it might've had an extra scenario with the samurai guy too.
Yuuno and Yumemi a best.

That's okay, I want to play Saturn games anyway lately.
I went through Grandia and overall it was fantastic, rarely I have felt so attached to characters in a JRPG though again gameplay was stupid easy (especially in the late game once you have access to the SP moves that yield insane experience) though at least it had a couple of intense boss fights and the final optional dungeon, the 3 hours long tower, had me scared of dying at the end so I went in unpreprared.
In fact I should probably play through the Grandia museum extension too

Seems to be mostly good stuff except for the loss of the 奥義 animations and final-blow animations, and changing Chief Bull's lines and voice actor.

The game does have a lot of racist jokes but that's the entire point and the kind of humour the series has, and to be fair in 4 the Japanese are the one that are mocked the most while indians are treated in high regards. I can easily imagine a modern retard getting offended by the whole "my [Indian] kids are trying to become white people!" thing but in reality it's depicted as something that comes from literal evil.

The Retro-bit dpad is almost 1:1 to a real Saturn controller dpad. That's the only reason people put up with retro-bit's cheap feeling build quality and terrible firmware support. Most competing Saturn style pads that are sold have better build quality, but the dpads were designed wrong and don't pivot right/aren't mushy. A real Mega Drive/Saturn D-pad should feel kind of strangely in-between a nintendo dpad and analog stick in terms of control. You should be able to smoothly and accurately pivot between all 8 directions.

Genesis US pads at least have glossy dpads that are very hard. Saturn JP pads use a different plastic for the Dpad that has more texture to it and is softer. Retro-bit dpad is somewhere in the middle. I've never had a JP Mega Drive pad or a US Saturn pad, so I can't' comment on those. The rattling face buttons are a thing with both Mega Drive/Saturn controllers. I always assumed they were supposed to feel big and loose with lots of movement and action like an arcade game button. It's fun to hear them slapping around when you're playing fighting games. The action on the shoulder triggers on a real Saturn pad is unbelievably shit if you've never actually encountered it before. Like other anons said it's basically a mouse click. I have no idea why, but those also rattle around on a real Saturn pad, somehow without activating. It's like the whole trigger enclosure is shaking, not just the button on top.

If you are interested in the Retro-bit analog pad, here is my quick review:
It's fine for games that actually support 3D pads, and very good for the Lobotomy shooters, Nights, and Baroque. It does a very very poor job of emulating the steering wheel though, and an even worse one of emulating the twin stick controller. Don't buy it to play virtual on or racing games. The double triggers are REALLY good in games where you can remap controls in game like Quake, otherwise completely useless. You gotta update the firmware, or it ships broken.

It can but badly and with great limitation

PS1 don't have any problem just look at the dash effect of the 2 versions it's night and day (and you dash constantly in X4 so having a shitty dash effect is much more problematic than a few neat effect on 1-2 stages)

It can do 2d transparency SNES style (single sprite + single background blended together).

Only practical use of that was the underwater boss in Panzer Dragoon Saga or the fogging in Sonic R.

I've played a lot of games using AI translation and the results aren't always good, but in this case there are. I believe I'm getting about 90-95% of the meaning, and it's noticeable when something is wrong to the point I can infer what they meant. I haven't stumbled on a single incomprehensible translation and only once or twice did it obviously miss translating a few words when talking to NPCs
