Are you at least playing the JP/EU PS2 version and not the inferior US-tuned ones?

What's the difference between the two versions?

handling is way different. the EU version has traditional grippy handling and NA has you sliding everywhere
both feel pretty bad though

Everyone shit on this game when it was released. Which I distinctly remember because I thought the art style was amazing.

The original JP/EU PS2 version was widely criticized in gaming press for supposed bad handling. Capcom took notice and redid it completely for the US PS2 version (used as basis for other console ports in all regions, also includes extra tracks and cars), only for critics to still say that the handling is bad, but now in a completely different way.
