Sagaia and Fantasy Zone are sick if you like SHMUPs. Most games on the SMS have not aged well compared to the NES though.

NES > SMS
Genesis/MD > SNES
Saturn > N64
Dreamcast == Gamecube (they both suck)
Not a Nintendie, faggot.

Im crazy in that i dont see a reason to compare them head to head. Its like they are two seperate machines, almost.

Anyway to answer op, sms was pretty cheap back when i actively collected games. So it was gun to just order random games, the light phaser games are neat. I think choplifter gets overlooked, zillion was fun too but you need scratch paper for the codes.

Man, back in the '90s, we was broke as hell, but my pops snagged a Sega Master System from the Salvation Army for cheap. Monaco GP II is the shit, you faggots talk about fag games but not the heavy hitters like psycho fox or power strike, the fuck?

More like
>The Sega Based system
I loved everything about the Master System except the D-pad. Young me was fond of Nintendo's D-pad. I love that it's still developed for in Brazil. Some of the rarer ports blow my mind.

If you've played Phantasy Star, most others will disappoint.

Some shoot-them-ups are considered superior to their SNES versions because SNES is hella slow

I don’t believe there are any shmups released on both Master System and SNES.

This, also the sequel, which was great on Master System, but people usually skip it due to the infamous Game Gear port.

A lot of people skip the 8-Bit Sonic games because they're on less powerful hardware with less flashy graphics, but I think they have a lot of charm that's unique to them

Here's my list, although it lacks some of the Disney titles that often pop up on these sorts of lists as well as games that were probably better off on other systems (looking at you Dynamite Headdy)

Alex Kidd in Miracle World
Alex Kidd in Miracle World II
Alex Kidd in Shinobi World
Asterix
Aztec Adventure: Golden Road to Paradise
Captain Silver
Choplifter
Danan: The Jungle Fighter
Fantasy Zone
Fantasy Zone II: Tears of Opa Opa
Golden Axe Warrior
Golvellius
Kensaiden
Lord of the Sword
Master of Darkness
Montezuma's Revenge
Ninja Gaiden
Phantasy Star
Power Strike
Power Strike II
R-Type
Rastan
Shinobi
Sonic Chaos
Sonic The Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog II
SpellCaster
Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap
Wonder Boy in Monster Land
Zillion
Zillion II

Strong disagree here, there are barely any good SMS games compared to the NES's library, and most of the good ones are pretty basic arcade conversions and so-so platformers. Obviously there are standouts, but few that reach the level of innovation or stylishness of their NES counterparts.

I think the Streets of Rage SMS versions are pretty cool desu
Anonymous No.12017861 [Report]
>>12017854
Totally legitimate opinion, same with Ghouls N Ghosts, but from what I can tell a lot of these SMS ports of titles that also appeared on the Genesis tend to mostly be strictly worse versions, often with mangled soundtracks that badly attempted to replicate the Genesis versions instead of doing something the SMS could actually handle. I can't think of any reason to include them beyond pure historical interest for the average person trying to get into Sega's earlier stuff

NES aged better for sure, but then again it's arguably the greatest library ever, Master System still aged well though.
Anonymous No.12020039 [Report] >>12020073 >>12020087
>>12019401
>greatest library
That’s not the ps2. The nes and ps2 both have the issue of being full of absolutely terrible trash and your chance of picking a good game randomly from its library is very low but both have amazing games.
I’d say maybe 1/25 nes games are good.
Anonymous No.12020073 [Report]
>>12020039
I'd argue that the NES has about 250 games worth playing, although my personal list does include some famicom titles and a few homebrews. Given that there were less than 1400 officially released titles across the NES/Famicom I would say your odds are way better than 1/25
Anonymous No.12020087 [Report] >>12020975
>>12020039
If you're going by ratio, the Dreamcast wins, its library has the highest average rating of any console. Though some of that is due to the fact that, for whatever weird market reasons, there was a smaller percentage of shovelware crap dumped on it than most other systems. If you want PS2 on top you should be arguing from the number of games rather than ratio of good vs bad
Anonymous No.12020187 [Report]
Renegade was better on the Master System over the Nes version, why was that?
Anonymous No.12020209 [Report]
Poseidon Wars 3D has the best OST of any 8 bit game period.
Anonymous No.12020324 [Report] >>12020450
>>12008770 (OP)
Man, the peak of the SMS makes the NES look like shit. Why was the better hardware used to poorly?
Anonymous No.12020450 [Report]
>>12020324
Because you really weren’t getting many advantages with the hardware (practically any game you can make on Master System is doable on Famicom, once mappers came out) and the Famicom was far more popular, so third parties went there instead. Plus, Sega had already released a console two years prior that they quickly moved on from, so consumer trust in their consoles was already low.

I grew up with a Gamegear.

Safe to say most Gamegear games match their Master System variant?
Anonymous No.12020758 [Report] >>12020823
>>12020745
Except for smaller resolution, and I thank sometimes more colors, since Game Gear had a palette of 4096 while the Master System had only 64 colors.
Anonymous No.12020823 [Report]
>>12020758
Correct on both counts
Anonymous No.12020873 [Report] >>12021034 >>12022213
not even trolling, Wonderboy in Monster Land is the best game for me in Master System

Golden Axe Warriors is the shit too. Psycho Fox and Alexx Kidd are nice but kinda janky

Disney games as already mentioned

Overall, I think Master system is a little better than the NES, America just never discovered it.
And it shows, indie dev never make new versions of this games, it's always Nintendo and now Ps1
Anonymous No.12020975 [Report]
>>12020087
I would also add the fact that the Dreamcast didn't last that long either.
Anonymous No.12021034 [Report] >>12022213
>>12020873
As a kid, I swore by Dragon's Trap, but now I prefer Monster Land. More challenging, gear upgrades feel more impactful, so overall a tightly designed game.

>>12014584
One of the best early titles.

I'll add Submarine Attack (just an okay and pretty easy shmup, but the underwater scenery make it stand out for me)
And Miracle Warriors as it's unique, if a bit clunky, for a console RPG.

Is this the typical case where the bigger game just has more padding and worse pacing kinda like CV1 vs CV3?
Anonymous No.12022450 [Report]
>>12022213
Dragon's Trap is a good metroidvania
Monster Land is a one of a kind arcade with RPG-lite elements, tightly paced yeah

Like "Crash 1 is better than 3 because is simpler", yeah

only one i can think of is r-type, which is much better on the snes
Anonymous No.12022536 [Report]

R-Type wasn’t on SNES. Super R-Type was, which was similar to R-Type II, which wasn’t on SMS.
