ITT we discuss platformers on the Sega Genesis that are better than sonic.

QuackShot for me, owned both it and Sonic 1 then... and played QuackShot a lot more.

Man the Genesis rules. Insert Sega tape, begin having fun, it's that easy.

It's honestly funny the lengths SEGA fags have to go to find "actually good games" on their systems. I mean, can you imagine a tendie even resorting to a McDonald's game? This has to be a deliberate joke.

Yeah. If it wasn't for Sonic, no one would have bought the Genesis in North America. Altered Beasts wasn't selling consoles and Alex the Kidd sucks.

The only platformer better than Sonic during the 16 bit era is Rocket Knight Adventures.

For a platformer themed around Ronald McDonald/McDonalds it's very good, even if it was just a McDonalds paycheck for Treasure.

My own favourites;

Mascot platformers
>aero the acro-bat
>zero the kamikaze squirrel
>ristar
>tiny toon adventures
>world of illusion
>cool spot
>earthworm jim
>quackshot
>lost vikings
>mega turrican

Non-mascot platformers
>batman returns
>shinobi 3
>alien3
>blades of vengeance
>aladdin (get fucked snes throwing apples like a fag. Sega aladdin gets a scimitar)
>cadash

I love platformers so much bros

I could never properly enjoy sonic. It's just too fast paced and feels like a game where you have to memorize levels rather than progressing through it naturally. The jump physics are strange to me, too. This is probably due to the fact that i had an nes and snes and a family member had a Genesis. So I guess I was just used to mario physics.

I've never played sonic as a fast game. Sure there are all the semi-scripted loop bits etc but for general platforming unless you're a speedrunner, sonic for me is a typical move carefully and explore sort of platformer.
The whole muh speed gimmick was always dogshit and now the modern games are shitty on-rails extended qte's instead of actual explorative platformers.
3d sonic should have become a spryo-esque explore and collecting game with a few levels or sections that played like a racing game to utilize the speed gimmick, and give sonic a dash button so when you're just trying to explore and platform he doesn't set off sprinting off platforms

When I was a kid I used to explore every part of the levels before progressing. It seems to me that people today approach games with the checklist mentality of being done as fast as they can

Sonic is the only game I know that perfected slope physics. Nothing better than building momentum and doing a high jump to reach higher platforms

It just feels overwhelming cause there's so much going on and you have a time limit. Like th3 first level alone iirc has some waterfall secret entrance that leads to some deeper area that eventually leads to a spring jump that takes you back up to the main area. I get secret entrances are common in video games. I dont know how to put it exactly, maybe the maps are just too open for me? For a platformer, imo it should be a bit more straight forward.

Then you get to casino world and it feels like there's 20 different ways to beat the level cause again, there's so much going on.

But who knows, maybe trying it again at my current age will have me see it differently. I'm not saying it's a bad game, I get the appeal. I just couldn't get into it. However I loved SA and SA2.

Can't say I agree with these from what I've played (everything but Pulseman and Socket).

Like you can't tell me you actually think Castle of Illusion plays better than Sonic or is more interesting gameplay-wise. It's a pretty game and fun enough, but slow and there's not much to it.

These can be legitimately better depending on your taste.
The Wonder Boy games, I even like Monster Lair but its more of a shooter, it has a real Blue Sky in games feel.
Castlevania Bloodlines.
Pulseman
Ristar
Dynamite Headdy japan version

I played Alex Kidd expecting it to suck but its great and has system 16 like graphics.

>>12016381
I think Cool Spot is pretty bad, it even reviewed good in magazines. The gamegear version is better. Bit underwhelmed by Blades of Vengeance too.

Shinobi and Contra I like, didn't know if they were considered platformers.

>>12016463
James Pond 3 tries, its impressive in some ways but a mess in others.

I'm sure some autists on here wouldn't tolerate contra and shinobi being called platformers in the context of a sonic thread but if you're traversing platforms, it's a platformer.

My only divisions are the art styles. My rom files are in "mascot" and "mature" folders cos sometimes I'll be in the mood for some cute chunky cartoon jumping, and others a more realistic cinematic experience.

Forgot to add Chakan to my earlier list.

I'm a very casual gamer, when I play games it's on emulators on my chromebook with a digital PS1 pad and copious game genie codes so I can breeze through what are otherwise brutally difficult games.
Nothing quite like playing through an old megadrive game in a couple of hours using codes and save states without being fucked over by 90s difficulty
