deep sea research center and centra ruins are up there too on vibes alone. but i agree that the castle is the best in the series easily. I stupidly grinded up to level 100 before I went so the bosses were all piss easy (for some dumb reason the bosses level scaling stops at 70) but I wont do that next time

What are 9's flaws?

I'm somewhere on the second disc. It's been a fat minute since I played this year, but the last thing I remember happening was Selfie getting nuked. Up to that point I could not tell if there was a story and very little made sense. Every character was the comedic relief and nothing was taken seriously. It's such a strange and baffling game.

but really all the complaints could be ignored if the story was satisfying and good as thats the most important part of a FF game by far for me. but its not, its just shit and that will forever make it a worse game than vi/vii/viii/x in my eyes. those games all have incredible plot twists and amazing conclusions. what are the twists in IX? zidane is an alien and brothers with kuja... ok cool, whatever. the ONLY good twist is vivi's origin and shelf life, its a great gut punch but ultimately not that significant to the overall plot. compare that to aeris death or cloud's revelation in the lifestream, the origin of SeeD, squalls father or the many great plot moments in X and its not even close to comparable.

Other than that, it's a massive downgrade in design from the last two games. Ugly furries and deformed styles for no reason. All style, no substance. Melodies of Life is okay, the rest of the music is less memorable than anything in FF7 or FF8.

How is IX a flawed mess? It has a great story, a great soundtrack, and is one of the most memorable FFs ever made. I wouldn't call FF8 the best, but it is at least one of my all-time favorites.

But still, I would hardly call it the best jrpg on the system personally.

That's not even what the criticism about the level scaling is about, and it's a prefectly valid criticism. If you don't think it's a shitty terribly thought out aspect of the game, then you have brain damage.

Mechanics wise is really clunky (conferm at every action, can't reset the movement, slow) and also balance wise (the difficulty curve is one hell of a mess, with chapter 1 being the hardest and chapter 4 being the easiest).
That say, I checked the remaster that came out these days and actually it fixes all these problems. So, factoring out those problems, the remaster could be considered impeccable for a jrpg.

It's a sore point now. I like the game, I really do, but I can't pretend as a game it's bloated with all sort of shits that slow the pacing, the combat is almost useless, the fields battle are all scripted and basically just glorified cutscenes, Jowy's motivation at the end of the game makes absolutely no sense and the last third after Luca is very boring, and the recruitment of the characters is much more obtuse than 1's, for a worse use of them anyway (since Field Battles are fake again).
Let's hope it will work better as an anime than as a game.

Personally I normally hate how this kind of mod looks (in screenshots on /vr/; I have never used one myself) but these shots of yours look good to me. I mean I'd still play on an old CRT instead, myself, but this seems nice too.

VI has more freedom, VII better plot twists, X better battle system but overall VIII is the best FF. my only real complaint with the game:

I don't think IX's story is bad, but it just doesn't seem to carry any emotional weight. I liked all the characters well enough but I can barely remember a single thing that happens to any of them.

Also my pet peeve with IX is that it gives NO options for moderating the random encounters at all which it desperately needed because they were so frequent and the load times were terrible. It was so disappointing after VIII de-prioritized random battles and let you turn them off completely if you wanted and IX was just like "nope, back to having a pointless encounter every 3 steps everywhere you go." I enjoyed chocobo hot & cold, though

Hey man, I grinded limits for the other characters in the materia cave by the Zolem (because you can kill lots of enemies but gain minimal exp, I like to be slightly underleveled) with Cloud dead because Cloud naturally will get them throughout the game.
I'm gonna give my brain a little rest with just tequila and edibles tonight but damn, doing Gaea's Cliff on dissos was wild. Holy shit it's like my brain was overclocked while I was in a dream state. I haven't had so much fun playing anything in a long time. Do not follow in my footsteps.

On disc 3, grinding the same fucking enemy fior eternity to get to level 90 before entering the northern crater is burned into the back of my retinas. I was doing an autism-grade perfectionist run of og ffvii on PS1 hardware earlier this year
Got all characters to max natural HP rolls, maxed out all items to 99 including unique weapons using extended W-item, maxed out underwater AP to master, maxed out gil to 2^32, zero escapes on counter, etc.
Still have yet to finish 1B exp for all chars and 2^26 vincent kills but I had to take a break after like 4 months
