Characters its very dependant. The playable cast is very one dimensional barring Joshua and Pratau. Joshua is great with some player choice to shape his destiny and Pratau I liked a lot the side cast. Nicola was very interesting and I liked how much of an influence he was on Joshua and eventually Joshua on him. Adele going from her desire to cast aside her noble status as what she saw as a burden to embracing it as she realizes is a position that allows her to possibly positively influence natra.
The villains are also interesting for the most part. Though the game only gives them nuance at the end so you mostly see them as generic villains but its okay since its better than them being one dimensional.
What I liked about the story is that the actual main bad, Godard, is in the background influencing stuff so whenever something fantastical happens in the mostly political story, it doesnt feel out of nowhere like TO and FFT feels.
There is a bunch of interesting political stuff, mostly how the war of succession in Natra is being exploited by the foreign powers and while you dont directly oppose them they still influence the state of the war.
I really liked the kid segment. Kids are usually annoying but this kid segment was really interesting to show the character of Joshua and Adele. Though I feel like Clive and to a lesser extent Yuri were wasted. Mostly Clive since he doesnt shows up much and his death feels rushed.
Anyways I did really love it. Its been so long since a game hooked me so much. Guess because I didnt grow up with 1, I saw it as its own thing.

I mean the game starts with a massacre and HEAVILY implied sexual assault. Then does it again later. VH2 is very dark and serious and it has no qualms using imagery to drive the point across.
