That said, it actually might be one of the best video game movies of all time, when you consider what it's up against. I think I'd still rather watch this again than whatever they're doing with Sonic now. At least Bob Hoskins and Dennis Hopper are good.

I don't know if it's because of a lack of context, but Miyamoto has always presented himself as this big-brained game designer who took things from nature. Instead of taking inspiration from other games, GNG pre-dated SMB by a few days. Was DK probably the precursor to the genre? Kind of true, but GNG not only came before SMB, it practically invented the action platformer genre.

and Mario's physics feel like he's sliding on ice.
Sunshine perfected Mario's physics but the levels also suck.
Galaxy uses those same perfected physics, but with fun levels.
3D world strips away all the gay collectathon bullshit and distills the game down to pure concentrated gameplay

It's really terrible in a fun way, but one thing might be said, it probably went in the right direction but massively overshot the target. A somewhat gritty grimdark Mario Bros. movie might actually be pretty neat. But the trauma is too deep and Nintendo is just playing it ridiculously safe now. We'll see with the Zelda movie, but I still think they'll stick to the generic and formulaic.
