Been playing this for the first time in over 15 years and it's so much better than Thousand Year Door it isn't even funny. The areas are bigger and there isn't nearly as much tedious back and forth. The pacing is perfect, chapters are the exact right length and end just before you start getting bored too. TTYD has better theming and dialogue but everything else is worse. TTYD also just completely retreads on a bunch of shit from this game too, the opening couple hours are literally identical.

Start game with Goomba partner, go to Koopa Town located in generic green foresty environment, go to a castle for first dungeon, etc. The island chapter too is pretty similar to another one in TTYD too except its a pirates cave instead of a volcano. The difference is the pacing is way better in 64 and it did this stuff first.

I think PM64 is better than TTYD on paper (no pun intended) but is much more of a slog to actually play in practice. Either way, SMRPG is miles ahead of both so it doesn't matter

I found smrpg the sloggiest of the three easily.

Im actually playing pm64 for the first time right now after finishing TTYD a few days ago, which I thought was a 10/10. just got my third star and about to go through the shy guy box.

its a ton of fun and Im really enjoying it so far but Id be pretty surprised if it tops TTYD. I miss having partner health and being able to swap them front and back. I didnt even know about stylish moves and never used superguards so thats whatever. but really the setting and story just seem a lot more basic, though still charming. TTYD started out basic but everything from chapter 5 onward (aside from general white backtracking sesh which was obviously shit) just blew me away with sheer LUDO and the post game/100 pit trial gave me a lot of playtime even after the ending. what a great fucking game, especially the second half. even the first half wasnt bad, glitz pit was awesome as hell.

I DO like pm64s visual style and level design more though. the stages and dungeons just flow really well, a lot of TTYD was walking along straight lines. the koopa fortress, desert temple and klubbas castle were all really really fun to explore. but theres still some really good dungeons in ttyd too like pirate cave, x-nauts hideout or shadow palace.

I agree, ttyd is incredibly tedious, even if some of the concepts are kino (the wrestling chapter is a good example). The first Paper Mario is just typical rpg tedium.
