Why are the Final Fantasy garbage translations from SNES and PS1 days considered good?

hmmm i wonder why it sucks?

it's too bad they can't hire HBO level writers to help with dialogue

The translation is fine. FF fans expose themselves as retards when they think words like piety are too big and yearn to go back to shonen dialogue.

Nobody praises the FF4 SNES translation.
There's no official FF5 SNES translation, your picture is from a fan translation.
The FF6 SNES translation is generally pretty good. There's a few lines that could be improved, but it doesn't have glaring mistakes, out-of-place jokes or anything like that.

The Pixel Remasters don't have new translations, they use the translations from the GBA versions. In FF4's case, that's a detriment since it's inferior to the DS translation. For FF5, it's fine because they don't have a better translation, but it's not that great of a translation either, it's full of dumb jokes (and yeah, the Japanese version is already like that... but the translation adds way more to the point of absurdity). For FF6, it's no better or worse than the SNES translation, just different.

forget about the translations. everything about the PR visually is absolute fucking trash. the sprites, backgrounds, the fucking font, its all a downgrade.

Have you played through the SNES original recently? I have, and while it's not the worst translation ever by any means, especially considering Woolsey's circumstances, and it's the version I grew up with, it most certainly has more than a few issues. For one, it absolutely does have out-of-place jokes, admittedly not to the degree of a Working Designs game, but they're there (a good example is Terra calling Sabin a bodybuilder who's strayed from his gym, followed by Sabin referring himself as a "bear", which is what Terra originally called him as opposed to a bodybuilder). There's also Woolsey inexplicably excising nearly every single reference to the legendary treasure Locke is after in the WoB section, which gives added context to his motivations and serves as a clue as to his whereabouts in the WoR (not that you couldn't figure it out without those lines, but still). As for mistakes, it has those, too. Probably the biggest one is when Strago says Hidon will not show itself unless he goes to face it alone, which is absolutely not true and not what the original text says. And of course, there's the censorship. Slattery's translation is just overall better, even if a bit drier. I only wish there were a hack that used that translation that didn't also add all the usual QoL and gameplay alterations every other FF6 megahack includes.

Also, and I realize I may catch some flak for saying this, if you genuinely prefer Woolsey's script to Slattery's, a good compromise is the Ted Woolsey Uncensored Edition hack. It fixes just about every problem in Woolsey's translation while still keeping the overall flavor and almost all of its most iconic lines. I also like that, unlike every other FF6 "relocalization" hack, it gives you a choice of variations of the hack to keep the gameplay alterations to a minimum, only forcing a few things like B-Dash on you, which I doubt anyone will seriously complain about.

for the most part, only the character/enemy sprites are new in the pixel remasters
everything else is an amalgamation of snes/gba/ps1/psp assets

i liked the simplicity of the original translations because i was child when i played them and was still learning to read. it led to a lifelong love of reading. now i play the games for nostalgia mostly and i still prefer it to be the way i remember.

If you have a hard-on for cartoon villain dialogue directed at 8 year olds, I suppose.
