I only really do it with PS2 games, and only at 2x, and only with a good set of CRT filters over it.
It helps with games where you frequently need to read environmental details, like street signs, without losing too much of the soul.
But I agree that the vast majority of time it makes games worse.

Anonymous No.12133845 [Report] >>12145560
Games that got pre-rendered graphics in combination with 3d need either a high-res textures patch or you should just play them at the original resolution. Pretty much everything else will look better at the display's native resolution and game's native aspect ratio. Shadera also tend to work better when the image is upscaled.

If you want authenticity, go play on a crt. Playing on a modern screen at a lower resolution is no more authentic and a much worse experience.

Downsampled 3D models look great in games with pre-rendered backgrounds because the backgrounds themselves were also downsampled from a higher res when they made them, so it gives the models and backgrounds a really unified look, as if the models are really part of the world of the backgrounds

I get the argument for ps1/n64/saturn because by that point textures took crt/low resolution/wooble into account. Just all the quirks of early 3d. But after that no, by ps2 you already had some games that reached 1080i, it was clear developers were pushing the consoles and the HD era was around the corner.

The main reason I don't play retro in HD, other than it just not looking good most of the time, is that it tends to introduce graphical glitches. Lighting breaks or more often diminishes in strength, shadows start clipping through the ground, seams in geometry become visible, depth of field and motion blur effects stop working, 2D elements start splitting apart, etc. Same goes for widescreen. Sure, there's a number of games where none of this happens and it works just fine, but on the whole these side effects are pretty widespread and it's just not worth it when the game looks better at native res anyway and played on a CRT or with a shader.

this is what I've landed at after over a decade of emulating as well. There are some games that benefit from upscaling, usually PS2/GC and onward, Wind Waker comes to mind. As much as people harp on about devs having always had great consideration for CRT displays and low output resolutions, there's no reason to believe that was always the case and mythologise them in this way. I'll usually just play at native but if i think it might look better I'll give higher resolutions a whirl.

Yeah PSP is probably retro by now, but the sticky says
>Retro gaming means platforms launched in 2001 and earlier, and official game titles for those platforms released no later than December 2007
>The Microsoft Xbox, Nintendo GameCube, Nintendo Game Boy Advance, and Sony PlayStation 2 will now be considered "retro".
Anonymous No.12147354 [Report]
if the devs had the option of using a higher resolution they would have done so. pretending jaggy blurred graphics are the platonic ideal of retro games is the same kind of sheer mental illness that drives people to think square blocks in mario are supposed to be rectangles and the samus morph ball was supposed to be an ellipse.

couldn't attach because filesize limit but yes I do use a crt shader.
the reason it looks pixelated is because area sampling scales the pixels perfectly to my monitor res, which is more accurate to how the GC would output video to a CRT, which makes the shader better.
stuff like the glow on/around NPC's are broken the higher you crank the resolution. might not be too noticeable on its own but it's quite jarring the more broken effects you run into. even without a shader, Native res looks better because of how many native-built effects are missing or display unintentionally

As a primarily PC gamer the concept of pushing a game as hard as you can on given hardware (be it for framerate or fidelity) is a core freedom. I play as I see fit and do not care about the concept of intended resolution as that is mostly nonsensical, even in the dos days. People who lose their mind over "muh intended resolution" are people who don't actually care about the game itself, they only care about fitting into a mental mould of what gaming should be just so they can post about it online.

>yeah i'm a retro gamer, I NEVER play doom above 320x200

Many UI's in PC games are scaled to a specific resolution
Anonymous No.12150610 [Report]
>>12150604
Within the windows era that is still nonsensical for the most part as UI's would be expected to cover a range of common resolutions for the hardware of the time. Scaling to modern resolutions when we are throwing millions of pixels at a screen is a different beast and can be tackled in various ways such as mods or upscalers making that a somewhat bad point to argue.
