the genesis games are synonymous with a lot of people's childhoods hear. i only ever owned the original and spinball and i never understood the love for these games. i think sonic kind of lucked into being the mascot and took off more as a character than having system selling games

That's because you value cliche crap rather than innovation, classic Sonic whether you like it or not has gameplay mechanics that appeal to people's play style, it was a top tier platformer that actually was alternative in a true sense that it offered a totally different experience with the emphasis on speed and flash but not at the cost of gameplay

OG Sonic never was about pure spectacle, it was about spectacle combined with skill, unique pinball momentum, and being the first ever mascot platformer with advancing plot. Hate all you want because there was no Mario float in the Macy's Parade in 1993

It's a combination of the 00's Sonic Cycle era bad games for stupid little kids who don't know any better, and Sonic furfag fandom being some of the earliest content on the WWW.

because the sonic formula was only fresh and fun for a couple games. they never innovated and evolved the series in a smart way like mario did.

That isn't true at all.
Spindash in the second game.
Easter eggs and secrets in CD, with multiple endings and courses with uniqur BGM.
Multiple playable characters in 3&K with unique abilities.
Sonic 3D blast was different playstyle entirely.
Adventure 1/2 had fishing, treasure hunts, CHAO GARDEN for ffs
Heroes expanded roster with more unique abilitys and ultimate attacks for combat
Advance series had all sorts of stuff and advance 3 had unique skills for different pairs.
I get that Sonic doesnt have an awesome track record in 3D depending on your perspective but to claim they lack innovation of any kind is just dishonest. Just admit you were filtered by the fast platforming and move on

Playing the sonic games for the first time, the thing I discovered is that you can't get the good ending for any of them by playing fast as a first-time player.
You have to inch through levels to keep your rings so you can practice the special stages enough to get all the emeralds.
I'm enjoying the games, but people who call them fast are ignoring this aspect of their design where they explicitly discourage you from going fast.
Rings are an extremely forgiving health system and and extremely unforgiving collectable.
It's an odd balance.

botched approach to the 3d trasistion
they had 3d blast on the mega drive, which was impressive for the console tech but very flawed
then they were meant to have a mainline sonic on the saturn, but xtreme got ditched and had to placate fans with the sonic jam compilation
eventually adventure had to be pushed out the door on a console doomed to fail
it really is a shame because the dreamcast is a great console but they really could not stop being retarded in the mega drive to dreamcast years, so many bad desicions and so much money shovelled into a furnace

yeah the fisheye lens stuff looks no bueno, it's the kind of weird experiment a spin off would have and not a system selling mainline game like they wanted it to be
still though money time and resources were put into that, and them shitcanning it only hindered sonic's transition to 3d, especially when you consider developing a 3d game in the mid 90s was incredibly expensive. It's not the kind of thing you can ditch and expect to come out unscathed on the other side
