Re-played it recently myself. You can trivialize everything with the Chinese stealth armor and the unique ripper. Otherwise, the only weapons that scaled well to max level were the alien blasters, the unique DLC plasma pistol, and the unique plasma rifle from the android. Actually, you can trivialize the game simply by getting Dogmeat. Still, it's a fun game.

It's the worst Fallout game. It has shallow role-playing mechanics, awful writing, and unforgivable lore inconsistencies. It stripped out the reactive systems of the previous games in favor of a linear, morally simplistic story that appealed to the cawadoody/halo kiddy crowd.. The world design lacks the complex faction dynamics and any meaningful choices that fundamentally define Fallout. The move to FPS was a failure. It has the clunkiest shooter mechanics of its era even among shovelware. Many perks are underwhelming or meaningless and skill checks in quests are minimal or nonexistent. The open world fucking sucks due to its empty and repetitive environments and scarce meaningful content, not to mention how lacking in sensible design the entire thing is. Almost every character in the game is one-dimensional and lacking in the depth of characterization and story that NPCs in the previous games had. All this on top of the deluge of classic Bugthesda dogshit programming.

It stood out solely because it was capitalizing on an older IP, wasn't fantasy slop like everything else at the time (see: Dragon Age, Two Worlds, Divinity II, Witcher), and as mentioned before appealed to the kid/teenager shootyslop crowd. The late 2000s were the death throes of RPGs and Fallout 3 is the scene shitting itself to death.

4 and 76 are both better looter shooters with better exploration and level design than Fallout 3. BoS is a better action game than Fallout 3.

I challenge you to name a single thing that Fallout 3 does better than any other game in the series it is a part of. Not a single element that makes up Fallout 3 rises above mediocre.

And no, Fallout 3 being less gutted in terms of RPG elements does not make it a better game than 4 or 76, because Fallout 3 is still an absolute piece of shit in terms of RPG elements when compared with actual roleplaying video games or even other action RPGs.

Dump all combat special and max all mental special because the combat is a joke and the game fails to properly punish players for lacking combat-related special. The downsides of low strength are irrelevant if you aren’t using melee weapons and companions can carry gear that you can’t carry. You get a player home extremely early to store items you want to keep anyway. Endurance is irrelevant because every single enemy in the entire game is weak to headshots and every ranged weapon is so powerful with skill investment that they’ll rarely get close enough to you for low health to matter, plus the way that DR works means that with good enough armor you will prevent so much damage to begin with that having high health isn’t even necessary for tanking hits. Heavy weapons are uncommon through most of the early and mid game and their ammo is very rare + expensive so starting the game with high heavy weapons skill isn’t very helpful. The only thing that agility affects is AP which is functionally useless in Fo3 and can be offset by using jet if you really have trouble aiming and need VATs to hand hold you for longer periods for some reason. (Chem addictions can be infinitely cured at any doctor so no reason not to use chems). The only reasons to have high agility is if you’re doing a stealth character or using small guns instead of energy weapons, otherwise keep it low. Intelligence is the most broken stat in the game so set it to 9 and take advantage of bobbleheads to set it to 10. If you’re using speech then crank charisma for easier checks and higher speech skill, otherwise dump it if you aren’t. Perception is okay, it increasing the range where enemies show up on your compass. Not the end of the world if it isn’t high but a neat bonus if it is. Useful for energy weapon builds due to the skill increase. Luck is entirely up to you, either keep it average if you prefer to use your points in other special or crank it high if you have spare.

This is the problem with minmaxers, no consideration towards how pleasant the game will be to play.

You can "make do" with low carry weight. Except it means more inventory management, and who wants to do more of that.
I also wouldn't play fo3 without vats, so enough AP points just makes the gameplay more hassle-free too.

I set it to very hard (bonus experience), didn't use vats, but used the point lookout double barrel shotgun and lever-action rifle (~40 damage with 10mm rounds). Made the game more challenging and fun. Always rushed to operation anchorage, though. Not necessarily for the loot, but it's a great way to gain some early levels as quality weapons and armor are provided.

How much stuff are you lugging around on an average basis? A vast majority of items in Fo3 are actual literal junk that has no purpose outside of a few handful of junk items that have good enough weight to value ratio to justify hoarding for the purpose of selling. Chems are weightless, ammo is weightless, higher tiers of armor don’t drop frequently enough for there to be a situation where you’d be lugging around five of them at a time, and most sets of weapons you pick up will inevitably be used to repair your existing weapons so their weight isn’t relevant. There’s no situation that would ever justify having high initial investment in strength outside of melee focused characters. If you really, really need extra carry weight then consume alcohol and offset the intelligence drain with mentats or pop buffout or both.

Even with high AP, the way that V.A.T.S. is designed in Fo3 is so flawed that it’s impossible for a player to do a character that only uses V.A.T.S. while ignoring real time. Eventually you will be forced into real time even with high agility. It’s a pretty worthless investment outside of stealth characters. A player with the basic manual dexterity to line up head shots will have no use for its investment early on.

It doesn't need to be only vats, just cut down the "downtime".

One can play with stats at 1 and a barbwired dildo up their ass, but I want the game to be as good as possible to play, and sometimes that means unoptimal builds, but only on paper. In practice it's more fun and efficient to play.

If you need insanely high AP in order to enjoy combat that is fundamentally easy then you simply aren’t very good at the game. Some of the best weapons in the game like sniper rifles and chinese assault rifles are hampered by V.A.T.S. usage to begin with.

in 3 you're doing stuff the whole time. the only waiting is at the birthday party but there's plenty of NPCs to talk to. i found out if you're rude to the old lady she hints that you aren't from the vault. you can skip the goat just by asking mr. brotch to. in 4 if you just coc SanctuaryExt and ShowSpecialMenu, nothing of value is lost

Ironically, this is an argumentation tactic of 5 year olds who lose games. You’re making the argument of a loser. If a person’s ability to successfully complete a game and be thorough in exploring its mechanics is unimportant then how will you ever know how good the game is? If you’re unwilling to give an rpg its fair shot then why even bother? What a dumbass. If you’re going to spend enough time with rpg’s to the point where you’re engaging with strangers anonymously on a message board about rpg’s then what the hell have you been doing with your time in these games if you suck at them? Do you just run into walls and wipe on bosses and then turn the game off? If you can’t even succeed at your hobbies then you might as well consider suicide.

>any mods I should get?
I'd recommend playing it through the TTW for QoL features of New Vegas, and add
- most common stability patches and DXVK;
- Tammer's nif-bashed weapons and armor packs, with TTW vendor plugins;
- Busworld V3 TTW and Metro Carriage Interiors TTW for little extra lore friendly exploration (TTW Interiors adds too much new content IMO but see for yourself)
- Enhanced Camera for seeing your body in first person.
All those, except Tammer's packs, are avaliable for original F3, not requiring TTW.

NTA but I’ll take the bait: RPGs are the easiest genre of game because success is determined by your character’s abilities and skills, rather than your skills as a player. That is why bragging about being “good” at beating “hard” RPGs is nonsensical. They’re not difficult games.

An argument for using VATS?

This is just more cope because every rpg requires some form of player skill regarding combat. These aren’t point and click adventure games. In the case of Fallout 3 you need some form of basic manual dexterity to shoot enemies. Is 3’s combat a very in depth system? No, it’s rather simple, which makes being bad at the game even more embarrassing because it’s not a very complicated thing.
>rpg’s are all le ez
Lmao. Keep telling yourself that and stick to your limited library of games.

And if you’ve used VATS you’d understand its limitations and that cranking agility is a waste of points.

Why, did you crank the artificial difficulty up and turn everything into bullet sponges to convince yourself that youre an epic gamer?

Apparently you need them seeing how you can’t even manage to accomplish this. You’ve gone from:
>skill doesn’t matter, being good at a game does’t matter
To
>the mechanics are simple
If the game is so easy then why are you so dogshit at it? What an embarrassment. Did you figure out how to tie your shoelaces this morning or did you fail that too?

I'm replaying F3 after like a decade
did they patch out the age slider from the character creator at some point or am I imagining things? because I clearly remember making an old wrinkly grandpa 19 year old character

Only mods I remember were absolutely necessary for me was an XP reduction mod. First time I played vanilla FO3 I was level 16 before I even found Dad. I couldn't imagine how shitty the game would be like that with the expansions level scaling at play.

You haven't played jack shit in your 40 years then.
