1R is a great little bite sized SNES game (NES really), but I really love 2R. You should skip a lot of the completionism stuff though, 2R and 3 both have a lot of CRPG style filler quests that are not designed to be methodically completed by all characters rather than just doing some of them in passing as you do the MQ and bounties.

While i somewhat liked reborn gameplay game at whole is like at alpha stage at best
>Story is just characters at iron base spamming og text at you
>On foot dungeons bad? Let's remove almost all of them and add just one with dmg check walls!(it's still shit)
>You can just upgrade engine and resell it for 10x the price lol

At least Cygames seems to be working on a new one. I really liked Xeno Reborn. Maybe they will pick up where they left off with Wild West and aren't starting from scratch so that we can see it release sometime this decade.

3 is really disappointing
the entire western continent is just empty when you're expecting a decent amount of the game to be left, and the filler content at the end like collecting all the pieces of something or other (for the coil gun I think?) and then having to go charge the gun after that is just FUCKING C'MON tier. I have a lot of affection for it and if anyone that has played it wants to jerk it off I'll join in but I can't really recommend it
otoh 1R and 2R are just really fucking good games
Anonymous No.3765914 [Report]

In MM3 it's hard not to use the classic. MC hunter (a hunter with extra stats) + mechanic + female soldier. Going without a mechanic is generally just a giant ass pain and going without a soldier means half the non-tank itemization in the game is unusable. You have to know arcane nonsense like how to make a vehicle repair tool with the quantum doll to enjoy playing a weird composition.

In 2R with the subclass thing and more emphasis on foot combat you have a lot more options and more stuff works. But it's also haphazard, like wrestler and soldier having good stats while everyone else is terrible is supposed to be part of the class skill balance but they didn't rebuild the game from the ground up given the new options.

Nice. A Metal Max thread, it's been a while, and always loved its mount-vehicle battle system (could compare it to the mechs in Xenogears,) but I'm more of a wheeled and tracked mount kinda guy.
>favorite game?
Returns for its simplicity, MM2R for its customization (but in fairness, wasn't able to complete it certainly due to me missing some parts or equipment to beat other Wanteds or trying to go deeper in the Grappler's base.)
>favorite vehicle?
MM2R's Wild Bus, if packed with the aux anti-grav balls + S-E Vulcan Box, loved how it one shots even the tortoises in-game.
>favorite bounty?
In Returns, mostly all of them, sans Mr. Kamikaze, since he's fast and I can't Hollow Charge him with my Whitemuu - Red Wolf - Abrams squad.

2R's multiple people in one tank thing is too damn abuseable. You can get dirty rush and double strike on one tank stupidly early. Not having that is the main good thing I can say about MM3.

Returns -> Metal Saga -> 3 (The first half of the game is great, but the back half sucks balls. Don't be afraid to drop it and move to the next time if you get annoyed) -> 2R -> 4
Since you won't be going backwards with system improvements at any point with that order.

3 has a few major problems: a really really annoying encounter rate that never fucks off throughout the whole game, throttled exploration, and several very very grindy sections like building a bio-tank and long stretches of the plot. The MC's special gimmick is kind of shit for the game too, because the pile of bonus HP he starts with makes the early game not interesting and it's not even helpful later.

Bro, your literal yard work missions for a woman you shouldn't care about?
your having to leave your party behind to infiltrate Shelter so you can pick up a dress?
your having to screw up and get captured and tortured to advance the plot?
your having to advance time in game by fighting a huge number of enemies instead of by staying at an inn like how advancing time works in every other RPG?
your having to do that three different times btw?
your gigantic backtracking mission to pick up 12 batteries across the entire world that you couldn't have picked up early even if you knew where they were because they didn't exist until the quest starts?
your need to then charge those batteries by fighting 1 gorrilion machine enemies?
your Netsib Melach, bro?
your final dungeon that consists of fighting 10 cyber walls in a row?

Like, after meeting back up with Cola/Cora at the cliff cabin, the only thing in the main quest left that *doesn't* suck is the town/dungeon of Elurus

Technically, yes. It's battle gimmick is already niche, and the existing fangames based on it are wholly Chinese. Nowadays, this kinda discussion would be for asking tips to complete the fan-translated stories, and even then with metalmaniax, it's still harder to navigate, with my personal experience, Returns is the only game I was able to finish.

MM3 has the "Magnum Gades", which shoots 4 times. You can use the time transfer thing in MM2R to get the one you found in MM3 if you link the games somehow but it's a lot of bother to ruin your game with an overpowered weapon. It's an annoying rare boss drop.

In MM2R without doing that the best weapon is a three shot laser with a thin beam type AoE you get as a common drop from Groween. It's mostly the best because Ted Broiler is weak to laser. Since laser-reflecting enemies are extremely common it's dangerous to use it haphazardly though.

In Xeno Reborn I've found that it's a toss up between the Double Barrel, and the TNT Paranoia. Multi-hit weapons are just better than anything else in general, but due to Muscle scaling, the Random Fire skill and critical hits it goes from like 4x the damage to potentially 20-30x

But I can't remember bothering with any vehicle stuff. It has options to adjust the number of frames between the game accepting a repeat button press so you can make the menus lightning speed (but also slippery as fuck if you hold a button for just a little too long)
It has options to assign some deep in the menu function to a single button press for fast access to things like the Dog System or Metal Detector
It has the option to turn off battle animations.

Here's what I mean by tabletop focused (in relation to SaGa) that I should have been more clear

- Higher focus on more individual side-quests type arcs/problems/quests instead of one longer overreaching narrative with plot points. Main goal is still there, but the "side quest" type accomplishments on the way are more of the main meet of that game
- Lots of recruitable party members, less of a "main cast" syndrome
- Less traditional JRPG level up and stats system and level ups handled in a way closer to TTRPG roots
- Non-linear story and/or area progression

Stuff along these lines. I've heard these games are somewhat similar to SaGa in a lot of these factors, but anons are also known for lying.

I've only played MMR, MM2R, and MM3

I've never played a SaGa game but I played lots of CRPGs, I get no sense of any tabletop inspiration in Metal Max. There are tons of sidequests but they're usually not too expressive (they're usually filled with "but thou must" kind of decisions and when they aren't they just end up feeling like jokes) The design is usually, "pass a chokepoint, world expands, pass a chokepoint, world expands" where it's a sort of controlled nonlinearity. Most content is optional and the games have pretty fast speedruns.

You have a main character that starts alone that is the only one that gets any characterization at all. The others are either introduced in vignettes and then have no story relevance (MMR) or like Dragon Warrior 3 where you go recruit them in a tavern or something and they're created from nothing and never get any story relevance (3 and 2R). The vehicles generally have more personality and deeper introductions. There's really not a sense of a "main cast" at all beyond the MC and the stories are pretty light.

Level-up stuff is almost completely basic JRPG. MM2R has a subclass system that shows up a couple of hours into it but it's not too complicated and you can switch the subclass at will so it's not that "buildy". The vehicles are where a lot of that autism goes.

1. bring a tow-tank with over 100t of mass (its own weight + its cargo) to depress the buttons. The first 100t button opens a door to a treasure and you can reattatch your tow-tank after you get it, but the button on a higher floor you need to leave the tow tank on it until you're completely finished with the area. Don't walk back in to get it when you're all done either, just use the tank pickup service at a repair shop to get it back.

2. don't fight the yojinborg clones, they take forever to kill for shit rewards and all it does it shut down the bombing around the tower, which isn't dangerous enough to bother with even if you were ever going to come back here again

I never messed with intercept in returns because the best defense for tank battles there really is a good offense.
Special shells break enemy parts at too high a frequency, and if their parts are broken they can't use them to shoot you. This is like interception, but preemptive and doesn't cost you extra ammo.

As for making it work, I think you need specific S-E weapons on top of having your CPU capable of interception (and make sure the interception system is turned on)

>interception only works in towed tanks

Also, it only intercepts "conventional" projectiles, like missiles and cannon bullets, it won't stop stuff like lasers and fire.
Anonymous No.3802517 [Report]
>>3802502
It actually can be used with aux guns on the support tank as I discovered. The "beam blaster" in Il Migra can do it, which is coincidentally the same place you can buy the Emmy. I went outside and it started intercepting things I didn't imagine it would, like the sonic snakes paralysis gas attack.
Anonymous No.3803573 [Report]
Alright, trip report for what I learned about the "Support" program (interception with the towed tank) in MMR: It's stupendously powerful, intercepting most attacks. Like the Rommel supertank that is the strongest tank bounty in the game can't do a single thing to you besides a weak machinegun attack.

It works with the beam blaster that has infinite ammo, but it's practically as good with any high ammo count cannon if that feels like a sketchy oversight (any spark cannon can be modded up to 50 ammo and the low tier ones work fine and cost almost nothing to mod).
