There are countless tropes just like this that you don't even notice in your own native media that outsiders would call out or complain about. But the native, target audience "expects" to see certain things in certain ways because it communicates certain information quickly and effectively.
While I think most depictions of foreigners in native JP media is pretty cringe, I also don't see a reason why they should change it because it's not "for" the benefit of a gaijin like me. I just beat the game recently and the strategic depth didn't go beyond rock-paper-scissors. None of the maps had any side objectives nor were there any terrain effects. And I really didn't like how mages did nothing half the time since spells costed too much MP and it takes 2 turns to generate enough MP to cast spells.
