If you count soulslikes then Nioh 1/2 easily.
If you don't then probably Shadowrun, funnily enough.

>Create your own character
That's the same as every other heterochromia catgirl or protagonist midlander.
>Levels
Don't matter because content sets you to the specific level it expects you to be able to clear it at, so you never actually get stronger, just unlock more content
>Stats
Item level is the only stat that matters, and when comparing pieces of the same item level the answer is always, ALWAYS Crit/Det. There's no choice or build variety here.
>Extensive amount of skills
"Do damage", "Do damage but only after you press your first ability", "Do damage but only after you press your second ability", and "Do lots of damage (two minute cooldown)", wow what an amazing variety of skills you've got here anon.
>Gear
See above where stats are mentioned, there's no functional difference between pieces of gear, no sidegrades, no unique items.
>Quests
Walk to place, talk to NPC, maybe kill 3 mobs, quest complete, wow what an amazing quest. There are a single digit amount of quests over the entire 10 year history of the game that actually have the most basic degree of puzzle solving or interesting unique mechanics to them.
>Story focus, with both good characters and story
Anon, you can't genuinely believe this after 6.2, and you SERIOUSLY can't genuinely believe this after dawntrail. There are no characters anymore, just one dimensional cutouts that repeat the current writer's political beliefs and prop up his OC catgirl.

I wouldn't even call FFXIV a game, let alone an RPG.

you can stop crying now.

also, the salient point is that FFXIV has even less RPG elements than simplistic 16 bit SNES JRPGs where you can create unorthodox builds through mundane mechanical interactions. no, the job system, which probably has the most awful implementation I've ever seen in a video game, does not facilitate a good sense of progression.

You don't even have an argument. You made up stuff or heard it from some youtuber which isn't even used professionally to try and sound credible when your entire idea you try to peddle stems from innate emotional bias.
Not only that, you think you're the authority on what is and what isn't an RPG while at the same time thinking anything you said refutes the MMORPG genre.
You're an overemotional and not very smart person that likes to play at being intelligent while plugging their ears to anything that doesn't align with this idea.
You'd have a better shot at fooling some random layman at least if you weren't so close-minded. Of course, the irony is that all of this will fall on deaf ears because you're overemotional and close-minded. Oh well.

I mean if you just want to go down to class mechanics, yes. But historically? No, they're not knights, knights are just the closest equivalent europeans have to describing them which is why we call that period of Japan feudal even though it operated nothing like feudalism, it's more for the sake of the western layman being able to picture that society without it coming across as incomprehensibly foreign to him.

Knights didn't do much fighting though. It is a title, not a profession. Fighting was done by either professional mercenaries (not knighted or ennobled, just paid, usually foreigners who had no connection to the lord's people so had no problem attacking them) or by peasants roused from the local lord's land.

Not really. Samurai has an entirely different context in Japan. It just was a rank of social status but it doesn't really mean much beyond that. You could be dirt poor but still be a samurai, and thus upper-class samurai (joshi) would treat lower-class samurai (kashi) like garbage.
Professional soldiers in Japan are bushi, not samurai. They just get conflated a lot in the west. You didn't even have to be a warrior at all to be a samurai, the only requirement was your dad was a samurai, because again it was a social class not a job description.

Forgot to say that the reason why samurai and bushi are so commonly equated in the west is because Japan was a very strictly heirarchical society so there wasn't a lot of ways to move up the social ladder...except one. If you were really, REALLY good at killing people, odds are eventually the lord you live under would grant your family the title of samurai.

Alexander the Great isn't a great example. If you actually knew your history you'd know he owed most of his success to his father that built and trained the army, most likely assassinated his father, got lucky in war several times and then died and failed due to stupidity.

Someone like Gustavus Adolphus or something would be a better example since he revolutionized military warfare and earned the name "Father of Modern Warfare" and "the Great". Or many of the actually notable military leaders of history.

There's a huge difference between "never" and "they were so fucking badass they fought all the time at the frontlines just like in my animes".
Knights were typically employed as shock troops in certain battles where they did a charge with their warhorses and lances/spears/swords, often from flanks against targets already engaged to break them.
Most "nobles" in war were minor ones that got higher positions that normal (and usually safer ones) due to nepotism.

Equating nobles or knights to being some super manly badass in war is so far removed from reality you've clearly been watching too many movies and playing too many games.

It's like you're intentionally and selectively retarded. This is the only reason you got this last reply. You selectively ignore and misinterpret things to align with what you already believe. Like how you completely ignored the mention of longbows and pikes to only focus on crossbows in a very particular scenario where crossbows were a new invention in very specific regions.

Yeah I know that sounds super daring in the context of warfare today but back in the day it was actually really hard to die in battle, like 90% of casualties in 90% of battles happened when one side's morale broke and they started to run, and then were cut down in the rout. Because when you think about it, pre-guns it's really hard to kill someone in melee combat when they also have a weapon and are simultaneously trying to kill you. Ancient battles were less battles like we think of them, and more like several thousand instances of individual murder happening at the same place.

so now it's not that they didn't fight, it's that fighting wasn't even dangerous. this cope keeps getting better. imagine the insecurity that is spawning this.

>Item level is the only stat that matters, and when comparing pieces of the same item level the answer is always, ALWAYS Crit/Det. There's no choice or build variety here.
This was one of the main reasons I quit the game. The second was the story was peak FF but constantly interrupted by meaningless bullshit that could've been an optional sidequest.

I wasn't the person you guys were originally were replying to. I don't discount Great Man Theory but I also think its proponents and critics think too simplistically. Yes, you need someone with the mind of Hitler to become Hitler, but that only takes you so far if society doesn't produce the conditions where a Hitler can rise to power in the first place. Genghis Khan happened to be born right when the tribes were weak enough from infighting that one guy could unify them.
This is why all boards need thread-specific IDs if for no other reason than that it kills samefagging

capitalizing on conditions is the essence of being a superior human. we are creatures of adaptation. i see no need to undermine the actions of the individual because of environmental circumstance or vice versa.
