I like women parties. But ff x-2 is just so fucking cringe. It makes it even worse that ffx had a pretty good story and characters.

They turn rikku from a spunky fun girl into a dumb whore too. And pain is terrible. Why not just have lulu as the third party member? Just have her get pregnant at the end of the game.

They turned fucking Zanarkand into a theme park. Let that sink in. The final step of the pilgrimage of the first game with that amazing bittersweet music is treated as a complete joke in this sequel.

Op here again.

Okay the gameplay in x-2 is actually pretty fun. But holy shit going from the bittersweet ending of x, which is really quite moving, to the yrp music video intro of the 2nd game, if you play the games back to back, is really jarring. I don't think there's a single video game that gives a worst first impression than x-2

The combats fun though

Making the sequel a little more lighthearted would have been fine. But they went to far. I don't think theirs a worst example of this than the one you already named. It's terrible

there are a few things to keep in mind: throughout ffx, yuna says "i want this journey to be full of laughter." she makes that wish a few times but it's never really granted, the whole game's pretty doom and gloom with very little levity. so this is kind of her getting to have that.
2nd, i think this game's got a lot of value because it's an extremely rare piece of media that shows us the FULL aftermath of a jrpg: it's pretty rare that a game shows us what a setting looks like after it's been saved from a threat like sin. so it's very interesting in that regard.
all of that having been said, i do agree that it's VERY jarring to play to play immediately after ffx. i'm an ffx-2 apologist and even i found myself a little disappointed when i recently played them both back to back. still, it's a neat game.

The more I play x-2 the more I find myself liking it. But it just gives the worst first impression. I never finished this game as a teen because of that. But if you just let it go that the intro is a jpop music video it is a pretty fun game for what it is. And yea what you mentioned with exploring the aftermath of a jrpg is indeed interesting. I just think there was an opportunity to make a game with just as good of a story, if not even better, than X if they leaned heavier into the power vacuum politics angle. But instead the story feels like junk food with a very fun class/combat system attached. The moments where Yuna reminisces about her dead boyfriend are prob the closest this game comes to having good story moments.

Paine is also a terrible inclusion I still resent that lulu isn't the third party member. It's even worse cause Paine is designed like a dollar tree lulu knock off. If you wanted a gloomy/serious female protag that dresses in all black with black hair the game already has one. Lulus my favorite character from X and it sucks she, and wakka too, are relagated to a few short scenes in a short main quest snippet. Really lame.

x-2 is a really fucking weird game with lots of cool parts
>music is amazing
>combat is fun
>job/class changing/builds are interesting
>lots of things to do
the real downside is the story is pretty retarded and if you want to 100% the game you require a guide
also blitzball got ruined and that maths game for the mascot dressphere or whatever it was also sucked ass
regardless, fuck that music is cool

I thought it was great that in FFX the crusaders really were established as compelling tragic heroes that gave their lives trying to help everyone, and that it made complete sense that a fascistic-heroic youth group made out of their remnants (and friendly to the Al Bhed) would be a political entity after you save the world and would be a little bit dangerous and militaristic despite the world not needing that anymore.

The youth league came off as communist to me. The leader will accept literally anyone who applies after all. If they where fascist they'd discriminate on some kind of lines, whether it be nation/race etc. It's why I sided with new yevon. I'd rather miss out on 100% than side with those bloody commies.

This is legit one of the worst game I've ever played.
Read what Brandon Sanderson is saying about screenwriters and adaptations.
https://old.reddit.com/r/lotrmemes/comments/1g1d1sk/peter_jackson_andy_greenwald/lrh2ubl/
I think this is what happened to FFX-2. The writer, gamedev, etc. wanted to make their own thing, but couldn't find money to fund it. So they used FFX name like a leech.

"Save your tears, 'cause I'll come back"
I could hear that you whispered as you walked through that door
And still I swore
To hide the pain, when I turn back the pages
Shouting might have been the answer
What if I cried my eyes out and begged you not to part?
But now I'm not afraid to say what's in my heart

'Cause a thousand words
Call out through the ages
They'll fly to you
Even though I can't see
I know they're reaching you, suspended on silver wings

Oh, a thousand words
A thousand embraces
Will cradle you
Making all of your weary days seem far away
They'll hold you forever

Paine is included because Yuna would defer to Lulu's judgment instead of living for herself if she was there. Paine does feel a bit like diet Lulu at first, but she serves a good purpose and has the most interesting story of the three leads.

It is a spiritial successor to FF5 and it is a much better game in regard of interactive content than the misery that FF10 is with lack of side content, lot of minigames with relevant rewards, much better customization for the characters, way better ATB battle system that recently was implemented in a Mod for FF9, amazing design for each one costume - Berserker Yuna is legendary -, great music that tries to be different, much better replayability for challenge runs.

Same for FFXIII-2 too, super good at everything (and memorable ost too, super underrated and unique blend of past and modetn) but the story which is serviceable, way better battle system than XIII, what really matters are the characters snd their growth or chatacter study, Yeul and Caius are putative daughter and father done very well, you feel pitt for the two of them because abused by fate due to their circumstances, and easily the backbone of XIII-2.

Who the fuck plays games for the story only and expect fantasy games to adhere to rules of sequitur?

If the core gameplay is great, if the atmosphere is great, if the content offered is meaningful, if the characters are believable in context, then fine.

Exceptions: when a game is remade and the original story is shat upon, that is a massive issue.

It really gives the good peace time vibes. I'm kind of glad they didn't try to make a serious dark sequel which undoes everything that happened in FFX. It has everything you'd expect from peace time Spira from factions trying to take up the power vacuum to people shamelessly commercializing Zanarkand. The more "serious" conflict is thematically relevant with the past continuing to haunt the future but from the other side of the conflict. The game has something for everyone from infinite minigames, to storymaxxing, to gameplayfag stuff with Via Infinito. The only bad parts are the ending bosses being super weak to compensate for so much of the game being optional - the final sequence would have really benefitted from scaling the difficulty with the player's levels and completion percentage. Imagine Vegnagun and Shuyin being Trema tier if someone got close to 100%. And along the same lines, the completion percentage being such a focus could have been handled better. Clearly the intent was for you to do more than one playthrough using NG+ to get 100%, but the way the game is presented really leans into trying to do the impossible and do absolutely everything in 1 run which isn't a fun way to try to experience the game.

I liked it, played it and X for the first time recently. The gameplay and class system was fun and well-thought out. I thought the focus on YRP and the different tone were well done, especially as a narrative in a world that had already been saved.

The music was good, especially the memory of the lightwaves melody you hear on the main menu and throughout chapter 5. 1000 words also gave me feels, the Lenne/Shuyin story was woven into the worldbuilding in a good way. Music always seems to be good in FF games, though I've played VII, its remakes and X + X-2 now.

Getting to 100% for the perfect ending is too hard though. I was following a guide but gave up in chapter 5 when I saw I needed to spend like 6+ hours playing stupid minigames. Ended at 97% and still got the good ending so I was happy because I thought I missed the whistling partially (3 instead of 4).
