Is this a good piratey game or is the cover a lie? As long as there is sailing I'm good. If not what is a good piratey game?

Beyond piracy, let's talk about the ship/

The good
>A few nice shanties
> Rather than random overworld travelling on foot, you sail anbd find isalnds and do possibly many things out of standard order
>Ship battle mechanics exist and crew/resource management kinda matter
>non combat events do pop up
>you can technically be a pirate and go after non hostile ships

The bad
>Ship mechancis are ass and you usually just ram and do normal combat
>most islands that do not have plot heavy (as mandated by main or important sidequest( are like a bounty, a couple ocmbat encounter or a 2 level cave/dungeon. Not even many text events
>Quite a few things are gated if you do not have plot triggers and areas 15 levels higher are essentially gated too, so the payoff is 75% unintersing islands and events with not great payoff
>Reputation hits from piracy matter far less than you'd think

The cover isn't exactly saying pirates, just sailing, and there sure is a lot of that
But anyway, no, it's not good. Not on that front, anyway. I actually enjoyed it, but the sailing and everything related to it (ship management, ship combat, boarding, all that jazz) was easily the weakest part as far as gameplay went.

You can think of it like the fantasy caribbean. So there are several factions, one of them is a pirate one. You can have several pirate party members. You can RP and dress up like a pirate. You crew your ship, upgrade your ship, travel around the islands and fight in ship battles (text or boarding).
It's not a pirate game, but there are pirate things in it.

May as well ask here. How's the multiclass system? I'm immediately skeptical, since 90% of the time splitting yourself like that in games just leaves the character sucking dick in two separate ways. I mean I can think of some PoE classes that'd synergize, but not so much situations where having both on one dude would be better than just having both in a party separately.

>How's the multiclass system?
I will use the word that will trigger some people: Balanced.
You can multiclass anything and it will be viable and work, while effectively turning you into a new "class" with a unique name (Barbaria+Chanted=Howler).
The drawback is that each individual class can't access their highest rank skills (which is there to make single classing viable), but most combinations are stronger as multiclass.

Naturally some combinations are better than others, especially depending on which subclass you pick.
Like a Paladin of the Bleak Walkers order + Cipher Soul Blade becomes and Inquisitor with very powerful melee attacks and synergy, which also helps compensate for some of the drawbacks of each class.

It works largely because there is non standard synergy of what abilities and effects stats feed. and few classes truly become that much better when they reach their highest skill.

Wizard may lose access to the top level spells, but gets stupid boosts to damage for certain spells or extra penetration . Or a paladin/wizard can be like DA:O blood mage who survives everything.

Pretty much sums it up. There's a lot of california propaganda in the game and for me it seems that at some point they just gave up and rushed the game and most of the dlc. Feels more like a tech demo than anything else, which is a shame, I really like the way the game looks. Backgrounds are beautiful.

Considering it is a single player game with varied difficulty choices, you need to explain:
Viable for what?
Beating it on PoD? Then everything is, no question about it.
Doing the challenges? Playing solo? That cuts down a few, yes.

Then the same anon (you?) said >>3776407 that it's a single player game, implying balance isn't necessary in a single player game (but since they can't articulate themselves, I'm only guessing).
Then you replied here to that chain of replies >>3776412 which in context is posed as I needing to prove balance.

If you wanted to ask about Deadfire's balance in particular, it would make more sense to not do so in a reply chain like the one you just did, but either adressed to no one or the initial post mentioning balance.

>no, that's dual-classing and it's a different mechanic
Dual-classing is for humans. Multi-classing is for non-humans. The standard multi-classing is with 2 classes.
Pathfinder is the game where you cheese the system and typically pick 3 or more, with value drops in 1 or two levels of a class while focusing on 2 or just 1 other ones.
Like Ember in Pathfinder WotR might take 1 level Sorcerer, but then put the rest of the levels in Witch and Loremaster. So it's still effectively 2 classes. The norm was always 2.

No, you have an opinion that for some reason the standard in multi-class systems is to pick 3 or more classes.

>multiclass implies you can take more than two
No, it means you can take more than one.
From a gameplay perspective it doesn't make sense to spread yourself thin in like 2 level each in 5 classes, unless you can cheese it because the rules weren't well designed. This only really happens in Pathfinder if you're going for extreme minmaxing anyway, where you pick value level 1 classes to cheese.

Regardless, this is just your opinion you want to play off as some universal truth. Which it isn't, until you can prove otherwise with facts.

>A multiclass character improves in two or more classes simultaneously, his experience is divided equally
>a dual class starts with one, advancess to a moderate level and then changes to a second class and starts over

Deadfire classes start with two classes which are bing levelled simultaneously with perk points (ADND didn't have this system) assigned equally (every two or 3 levels you must pick one perk in each tree equally)
the character uses abilites of both classes with no restrictions
why do you argue in bad faith about this shit i can't comprehend, this is the least shit system in deadfire
even looking at the list of mulsticlasses, most of them are actually 2 classes together with only certain combinations being 3 (only 3 and all elven)

But fuck it, guess I'll need to slog through for the sake of my concept. I guess it might be better when I'm actually running out of wizard casts in a given encounter, where the Cipher thing acts as a backup?

It's good and all classes and multiclasses are viable on normal/hard, though some are obviously stronger than others. Only casters reallt have any strong reason to stay single class (for the most powerful spells), but even they can multiclass just fine and be incredibly strong anyway.

Weakest part of the game by far is the main plot, which is ass and makes no sense. Other than that, it's pretty fun with great itemization and I personally love the visual design.

The storytelling is not bad, the core hook is.
The idea of constantly chasing after the statue of a benevolent god out to do... something, isn't an interesting hook for most. It's also impersonal to the player.
This is why Deadfire works better as a fuck around game and you eventually progress the main quest every now and again.

If we use Planescape, BG1, BG2 as examples
>Planescape, you have no memories, you're immortal and strange things are hunting you. The mystery is tied to the player character.
>BG1, a powerful bad guy kills your foster father and is out to kill you and there is a mystery surrounding the player character.
>BG2, a powerful bad guys imprisoned and tortured you and your friends and takes on of your friends (that broke you out), there is a mystery tied to the player character

Plot = story. As you say, the story is bad, the storytelling as the pacing is bad. Hunt the big green dude, but find my dirty iron balls first. Its very important that you find the huge green dude, make haste!
>constant chase
Might've worked is it's a semi open world or if the statue vanished at some point. Spending two years cruising in the archipelago is bullshit, if every second counts.
>impersonal for the player
Well, it's not personal, but there's agency, as the player might die, too, if eothas resets everything. All in all the setting is completely unbelievable.
Poe is obviously much worse than the top 3 crpg of all time.

>Plot = story.
a piece of media usually has more than one story line
this is especially true for videogames and rpgs specifically
you have the main plot but you also have several dozens stories weaved into it as separate quests, often arching from one quest to another

Deadfire's main questline is weak, but the storytelling it does along the way is pretty good
I especially enjoyed the BoW DLC

>but find my dirty iron balls first
also this is bullshit
deadfire is the game least guilty of world completely ignoring the main events

The dlcs are rather good. I liked even fff.
>storytelling
I wouldn't say it's a paradigm, but it might well be sevicable. It's aeons better than poe1.
