Why is Morrowind the only RPG where you can increase your movement speed? It's such a fun mechanic.

Oblivion too. Seems like they weren't too concerned about balance or design, they made a bunch of variables and the player does with them as he likes. For better or for worse, it's up to them.

I know I wouldn't use any incapacitation effects in Skyrim if I could just backpedal at the speed of an olympian sprinter.

Not OP but I think he means "a stat dedicated to increasing movement speed" and not just an effect increasing it like haste or plain sprinting
I still think it's bait since even Oblivion had both Athletics as a skill and Speed as an attribute
>gothic
needs a potion, no stat
>NWN
haste, no stat
>bg2
haste, no stat
>FNV
gear i think, and a perk, again, no stat
So it's not really something baked into your character, you are not specializing and playing with your stats to create a fast character, rather, you are making yourself fast with something either temporary or a feat

Pic rel is pretty much demands you max your movespeed early on and give yourself the ability to jump over canyons. The extend of how big of canyons you want to jump is up to you.

I honestly enjoyed Morrowinds fast travel much more than the “lol teleport anywhere” of oblivion or Skyrim. It was fun and immersive to get to know the networks of boats, silt striders, and mages guild teleportation. And flying around the map at high level with max athletics and acrobatics and speed feels great. Skyrim in particular suffered from losing stats.

actions point's don't count, i know arcanum has speed but does it increase the speed you traverse in real time?
all the rpgs listed just give you more action points, but that's something different from Morrowind speed

They make you move faster if you wish. Also old Fallout titles have perks which only are used to increment your move.
>i know arcanum has speed but does it increase the speed you traverse in real time?
Speed in Arcanum is a derived stat but yes. Same is true for Agility in Underrail.

If you want an other very low hanging fruit, Daggerfall.

Not really analogous. Race (I.e. size) affects movement speed, Barbarians and monks get a static boost, there’s haste spells, that’s about it. Older editions had speed stats for weapons that determined order of attack resolutions within a round, but in DnD, characters don’t have a granular speed stat that all characters possess that provides a permanent bonus and can be discretely increased by the player as they level. Hell, in old versions of DnD your stats were effectively permanent for the most part.

Skyrim doesn’t even have any speed-enhancing effects in the vanilla game, they were only added in the finishing dlc

I think it's technically wrong to suggest FNV or F4, as vanilla, truly let you increase movement speed. The parts that allow you to do so are minor, like what >>3777116 said. It's not really the same like agility (gives AP) in Fallout 1/2 letting you move more or Speed (obvious) in Morrowind letting you move faster for the longterm while also not being a boost that feels small (having full AP in Fallout 1 feels big, having 10% movement speed in light armor feels relatively small)

Arx Fatalis. or basically any RPG that gave you a speed spell or speedy roadrunner boots.
one of the toughest enema in Arx are also constantly using speeded up movement to charge at you. the Ylsides.

for turn-based RPGs there's endless examples.

That's another thing with Morrowind, there's no meaningful hardcap on your attributes. You can't buff your athletics in vanilla, but you can buff your speed, and you can keep buffing it until the integer overflows. If you exploit alchemy, you can run as fast as your computer can load the terrain.
