Phantasy Star IV was ahead of its time and still holds as one of the best JRPGs period. The story was great, the setting wonderful, and OST full of bangers.

Phantasy Star II is good but so dated. Even then it felt fucking dated. It's best to use a guide for the maps, or play the remake on PS2 through emulation. They added QoL and extra stuff you can get through grinding battles (great equipment pretty early in the game if you're diligent, plus great items to heal your party you can stock for the end-game)

You have your timelines messed up. PS2 did not feel dated, it came out in 1989 for fucks sake it was probably the most graphically impressive JRPG when it came out. I don't know what other people dislike about it but I assume its hated because of the reasons I dislike it, the mixture of labyrinthine dungeons, half the foreground obscured by junk, and your character isnt centered in the screen so all together you struggle to find out where to go.

The block in the center-south of the upper right room is the biolab recorder, you touch it to be done with this dungeon

It didn't feel dated in 1990, or at least any more dated that any other JRPG on sale. This game came out before Final Fantasy 1 or Dragon Warrior 2 in English speaking countries because localization was so slow.

Phantasy Star is basically two games with great stories and one game with an interesting concept that could have been executed better all wrapped around games that aren't actually fun to play. Phantasy Star IV is a great story wrapped around an actually good game.

are you really throwing judgement if you never played the game before? What are you doing. If you have played the game and dont think the dungeons, especially some of the later dungeons, are confusing then you're blasted.

The difficulty at first is lack of characters and getting raped by Blasters. After that it's more of Dungeon endurance.

There's an actual explanation we have for this:
https://shmuplations.com/phantasystarii/
>Another issue was related to the dungeons, which were created by a new employee. Because he was new, he put a ton of effort into the maps and kind of overdid it… the game became more about the complex dungeons than anything else. I think you really see that on the Dezolis dungeons. They were really well done, and when Chieko Aoki saw them she didn’t want all the new employee’s work to be for naught, so we ended up using those maps… albeit with some mixed feelings. They contributed to the latter half of the game being unbalanced.
