The problem jrpgs is that they'll have women practically fingering each other, but their sexuality is still questionable because it's just a show for perverts.

In a 5 man band, "the lancer" usually has a backstory focused on male bonding, but no future prospects because they're setup to die through self sacrifice, caring about someone else (i.e. the male protagonist) more than themselves.

As soon as you entertain the idea "What if they didn't die?" -- all the evidence points them to being gay. I think it's just an artifact of narrative structure, because they have the potential of stealing the show but they aren't allowed to.

Shut the fuck up TVtropes, the majority of the time the "lancer" is competing with the MC for the primary love interest. For instance, Kain wants to win Rosa from Cecil and is lured into DARKNESS to do so, until he wises up.
Also, for explicitly gay/bi characters, it is generally the reformed villain who is an option for the MC, like how in Persona 2:IS you have the option of dicking down Jun once he stops being Joka-sama. Or more recently, the totally not friendship between Rean and Crow in Kiseki (which was so totally not gay they had Crow as one of the options alongside "canon" [blech] girl Alisa and fan favorite girl Altina [yay!] in the VR dating game).

You're dealing with a bunch of autistics here that'll sooner point out that Type-Moon isn't an Rpg, and crossdressing isn't a sexuality.
