Is this one worth tracking down or is it one of those 'you had to be there at the time' things.

I'm so alienated from the normalfag mind that I've stopped trying to give thoughtful answers to these types of questions. I enjoyed the game 20 years ago yes.

You had to be there at the time. I recently went back and played it on Dolphin and just didn't feel it. I still have my DC and a working copy of SoA, and as a younger man enjoyed it enough to play it to the end in a month during the holiday of 2000. But now? Ehhhh. Feels like everything else.
It's nice as a nostalgia thing though. Simple JRPG combat, 90s style. I think the game is too big and too long (that's what she said) for an adult to play, but if you have the spare time and like 90s style JRPG combat, go for it.

it's an absolutely great game, and you can emulate it on dolphin flawlessly.

Emulate and speed up, probably a good compromise. I had this game but never played it and got rid of it with my DreamCast (and lots of other old games) over two decades ago. Kinda wish I hadn't now.

I might play it on emulator one day, it always looked appealing and I have yet to actually give it a chance.

it's performative. People who ask these questions don't play games. If the anon wanted to play Skies of Arcadia, they'd do it. It's freely available, and easy to get.

I played it on my Galaxy s20 with no issues.
