I want a real nitty gritty JRPG that I can play with a controller. Nothing too modern, my PC is potato. I played Tales of Arise a while back, it was okay. How are the previous games in the franchise? I've heard they were generally better. I also bought the Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky a couple years back and never touched it. How is that?

Pic unrelated, but if you have any recommendations with similar vibes, I'd be down.

What do you consider a nitty gritty jrpg if you're mentioning shit like Tales of Arise and Trails in the Sky?

Nope, it's not the worst becauze Zestiria and Tempest exist.

Tales is all about anime characters talking about food and doing funny shit. You won't find edgyshit like that even in Abyss or Berseria.

So Abyss and Berseria are more mature in content? Good to know. The Tales games are charming but the campy and light-hearted nature with low effort jokes ruins the flow for me.

What does the remaster ruin? I played the original and the remaster. Both are great. Saying it literally ruins everything is hyperbolic and stupid.

Well, if the other Tales are 5/10 in regards of maturity, Abyss, Xillia 2 and Berseria are probably a 7/10. There are dark moments but it's not the series to look for depressing or edgy stuff. Megaten, Xenogears, Xenosaga, Drakengard and Nier are safer bets for that.

Im NTA, but the remaster is fine. People rightfully complain about some of the lighting but it's making mountains out of molehills. The one bit of QoL that's really good is being able to choose skills to pass down when fusing.

HOWEVER, emulating the PS2 version is free, whereas afaik, the HD remaster you have to pay for.

I don't feel like Vesperia is a 5/10 in regards to maturity.
Your main character assassinates people while his party sleeps in order to protect them from doing bad stuff.

Is the rest of the game like that, tho?
Characters talk about food, make jokes and bounce each other, Rita roasts Karol, Raven tells how others how old he is and Judith makes it clear she has a nice body. Even in Berseria besides the brother being impalled at the first 10 minutes of the game + isolated moments, the game is not really dark or depressing most of the time.

IIRC, this is basically why Berseria got censored in the west. Bandai namco didn't feel the game was dark enough overall to warrant an M rating over one scene.
