just got the collection on steam for cheap so i can finally finish the series. never had 5 growing up, so while i had a hero that spanned from 1 to 4 with maxed out stats, i never had the opportunity to transfer him to the final game. too bad i lost the floppy he was on like 19 years ago. not that i have a floppy drive anymore even if i still had the disk...

anyway, what's the best way to play, and why is it starting a thief and giving him magic?

Any class can become a Paladin in 2 (at the very end), Fighter only in 3.

Honestly, this game does fighter the best - lotsa challenging memorable encounters, easiest exploration around the map (untill you get enough experience to trigger Tyranosaurus spawns). Thief is second best due to how tense it can get sneaking around for the first time (the game just nails the feeling of being a in a newbie of the criminal underground). Mages suck - all of their solutions are "cast spells and instantly solve the puzzlle", there are no arcane rituals, no lore studying or even the basic bitch staff crafting to nail that whimzical apprentice feel. Worst class easily.

I was also a never-played-5er for a couple of decades but I finally played it like 3-4 years ago (with ScummVM I think). It's not bad and I enjoyed it. Back in the late '90s I was so mad at how fuck ugly 3D games were compared to pixel art I just ignored it but now that it's ancient history it's fine.

I like Magic User/Wizard. I mean, not really, because their gameplay amounts of having a specific spell for a specific puzzle and that's close to the peak of boring design, but my fondness for magic overrides my dismay.

Probably shadow of Darkness. I enjoyed the combat a bit actually, and had some really memorable quests.
Though 2 was pretty memorable.
I like it when games visit this kind of setting.
Warrior/Paladin is what I did in my rerun.

for some reason the slavic setting of 4 always just did it for me. doesn't hurt that the john rhys-davies is the narrator, either. that man's voice is amazing.

i like playing thief best, but teaching him magic is great. honestly at times being a thief that can cast fetch and open almost feels like cheating.
can't really say i have a favorite npc or race, i just like the vibes of the games in general.
and honestly i don't even remember any waifus. who the fuck is playing quest for glory for waifus?

Coles were early adopters of waifufaggotry and ardent supporters of blue balling the PC. Also fuck their expanded backstory of Katrina. I wasn't her biggest fan to begin with but having her as a prostitute for geriatrics was really uncalled for.

My impression with it they blew most of their kikestarter funds on the artist who did the backdrops so the rest of the game is barren. Beautiful but barren. Really hit or miss writing as well, loads of something awful references and self inserts by the owner, really slow and clunky combat and moon logic out the ass for some puzzles. As in no multiple class solutions you'd expect from a QFG but you need this specific item for this other specific item that triggers on this specific place and best way to figure is to swap all items in the inventory until it works. That one sidequest for goat shit into honey into hashish on one lamp post near some semi random forest watchtower for end result of sardines (or canned meat iirc) or something similar comes to mind.
Oh yeah, and fast travel, bunch of areas and most qol features in general including a unlimited press to win button in combat are locked to a single class.

tldr it's as barren as Mage's Initiation but with extra cringe on top

You have to lure the flame to the end of the maze. Use your spells to move ladders and boulders. Use trigger to change the size of the flame to make it through openings. Flame dart is a lure, your flame will go towards it like a moth.

Hold on, let me speculate. The thief equivalent has access to a tunnel network and uh, some thrown poison knife or grenade or something that trivializes combat?

Pretty much and it's a boomerang like thing that's a reskin of fireball but hits harder and doesn't cost any mana to use.
