The setting is comfy, music sounds nice, the reputation system is interesting, working for orcs was also a nice touch, but that's about. I used to be 3's apologist until I've replayed it recently

The gameplay, combat and movement is dogshit compared to even the jank as hell previous games, feels so floaty and less tactile. The setting and world are cool though.

I still value it over most modern slop. It has great moments like slaying the demon with Gorn, the great orc mine, fighting through the ruined capital. Of course they lose their impact when you are replaying the game, I also wouldn't replay G2 anymore after having it all memorized.

You know, I never got around to playing it, since at the time it came out - when I was REALLY into the series and excited - my piece of shit PC could not run it properly... and by the time I got a new one, well, a lot of time has passed.
I should get on that. But before that, one question...
Is playing a mage just as goofy and janky as with every other PB game

This is bad advice. In G3 mages have mana regeneration, so it's really not a good playstyle. I don't know what you mean by jank, but the melee progression from weak to powerful is still one of the best things about the game. If jank means that it was too hard for you, then you probably just refused to level your health. You can quickly double and triple your survivability through that.

They somehow managed to regress and make it MORE jank than Gothic 1&2, and those games aren't known for their amazing combat. You can just miss enemies while swinging at point blank range and die instantly. The engine Gothic 3 is on is just such a massive piece of shit and feels terrible. If Gothic 3 was on 1&2's engine with its basic gameplay it might even be the best one.

Yeah I don't mind the more sensible difficulty increases, but them messing around with LP costs basically made anything but hyper-focus nonviable, and even then almost demands scouring the place for tablets and boost potion ingredients. Not to mention expecting prior knowledge, not to use them too early or you just fuck yourself. Which is probably what bothers me the most, as I fucking despise that kind of design.
But at least there's mods. And cheating, if all else fails. Now obviously just pumping stats/skills makes everything boring, but using the console to basically "respec" saves a lot of headache if you realize you fucked something.

The combat change is fucking terrible too though. NOTR changes it from the simple Gothic 1/Gothic 2 vanilla damage formula to some mutant abomination trying to resemble a chance to hit system where your crit chance is actually your hit chance and your normal hits are glancing blows. It absolutely buttfucks the combat for the first 60% of the game. That along with the LP changes makes for a horrible combination because you need to raise your crit chance (weapon skill) to do any damage and the new LP system limits that heavily early game.

I also played it with a community patch, and while it didn't have any crashes, the multiple small changes they made turned the whole experience worse. Can't elaborate more than that, since it's been a while.

I think the worst thing about the way Gothic games (and the later PB titles, too) do stats/skills and boosts is that it for some reason brainrots people into telling new players that no, you HAVE to play in this autistic way to get the perfect stats or you will SUCK and your playthrough will be RUINED and you'd better restart RIGHT NOW etc
Meanwhile my dumb teenage ass was able to get through NOTR back in the day just fine, with no prior experience and fucking around with LP spending like an idiot.
I don't know what it is about the mere possibility of optimization that gets some people totally hung up on the idea.

>working for orcs was also a nice touch
They were completely retconned from being a primitive tribal society unique compared with humans that used crude weaponry, wore minimalistic loin cloths, lived in teepees and spoke a guttural beast-like language to all of a sudden now speaking English, wearing normal human robes and armor, living in normal human buildings, using human weaponry, eating at fucking dining tables with plates and utensils like normal dudes and having an organized societal and military structure. For some reason they thought after two games giving you the option to join them against the humans would make sense, but because of that most orcs are now also push-overs in combat (it's easier to kill an entire platoon of heavily-armed battle-trained orcs than a couple wild animals). Gothic 3 utterly ruined the fearsome aesthetic of the orcs in the original games by having them become ordinary, mundane humanoid enemies.

And orcs were simply the endgame enemies in the first two games, it doesn't even make sense in-universe for every orc to be at the elite paladin level or humanity wouldn't have lasted a week against them.

Whenever I play these games, I'm always baffled by the decision to have the Mages get more interesting content here and there, but at the same time make them boring or annoying to play AND frankly have it make no sense for the main character. He's too much of a shitter to buy into anything the mages say, and the plot contrives to let him skip every single formality possible just so he can become the big dick mage man in time.
They did the same shit with Risen.
What gives?

notr sucks, yeah. You're either underpowered and enemies take dozens or hundreds of hits to kill (while they one shot you), or you one shot them. And they fucked with the LP system so you have to postpone getting bonuses from potions, etc. until chapter 2. It's similar to what happened with the souls series. The devs listened to the vocal minority of mentally ill masochistic loser spergs and they flanderized their game by making it "hardcore"

NOTR was the only game I've ever played where I got annoyed enough with its systems that I just fucking cheated my way through by editing in more LP to counter the changes

Bow is very strong in NotR, but your current weapon limits the highest tier of enemies you can reliably kill, without spending too much time and arrows. You'll often have to abuse the highground and climb to unreachable places though.

You got REKT by boars, dude. And you are also talking out of your ass about orc society. The orcs around the sleeper temple are the equivalent of the human swamp camp. The actual orc horde has a large war camp which implies organization. We also fight their fully armored elite warriors. Which was a plot hole in G2 by the way, because the orc army would be absolutely unstoppable like that. G3's rebalancing of orcs made the 10 years long war somewhat believable. High level orcs are still some of the toughest enemies in G3, though. Finally, the fact that the Mongols lived in Chinese buildings after conquering them is going to blow your mind.

Wild animals, yes. Who mentioned boars? Maybe I was talking about wolves? Seems like other people's arguments live rent free in your head.
>you are talking out of your ass about orc society
Is that why it's the only way orcs were depicted in the games that matter?
>The orcs around the sleeper temple are the equivalent of the human swamp camp
Curious you say that. How are they depicted in G1's intro, when they're seen fighting the King's men?
>The actual orc horde has a large war camp which implies organization
Does it imply them speaking English and living in human houses using human utensils?
>We also fight their fully armored elite warriors. Which was a plot hole in G2 by the way because the orc army would be absolutely unstoppable like that

Gothic devs followed Bethesda's footsteps in the sense of
>we make shit up as we go
retcons happened and would have happened if they were still making Gothic games
one could rationalize Khorinis being so isolated that the orcish tribe never advanced and probably regressed, the opening sequence of archer fag being stomped by tribal orc was depicting valley of mines not mainland
>what about orc elites
again, Ur-shak mentioned that orc armies arrived from ships and mountain, for all we know there is a landmass where orc society achieved higher technological level than the tribal orcs in the valley of mines
even Mainland doesn't have anything impressive in terms of industry, some noteable forges in Myrtana and Nordmar but nothing like foundry to produce cannons we see on the paladin ship or Khorinis, Myrtana might be just feudal society that traded for them and there are other human regions (some might say this is the Risen connection)

I'm still mad about them straight up deleting two of the paladin runes with nothing to make up for them late-game, leaving the paladin with a whooping total of one (1) offensive spell, the Holy Arrow that does jack shit when it matters. And then healing and a fucking light spell.
At least as I recall you can cheat Banish/Destroy Evil runes back in, but still, what the fuck was their problem? Nerf the numbers a little if it's too much, just LOL GONE is a ridiculous method of "balancing", especially on top of the stat fuckery they did making the Paladin that much worse already.

You will now read my faggot opinion on this.

I have long struggled to understand how (partially) the same team that made gothic 2 and 1 could make such dogshit game.
After reading some legacy q and a archives of mike hoge answering what the design philosophy was, the entire idea was you could finish the game and do quests in any order you want. However, downstream from this idea is lack of chapters, structured faction system (because you have to make each town a self contained little story) and changing meaningful narrative progress in faction for faggot points.
The reason why the game felt so empty, like an offline wow instance with faggot fetch quests is because it was designed that way, not because muh jowood. Of course, I suspect they would've added some better quests if they had enough time, but I suspect it would've been same quality as the "outlier" quests like helping that mercenary take revenge on Rhobar.
You can see this design philosophy pop up in risen 2 once again, which Mike still worked on contrary to popular belief. Self contained little islands that can be finished in any order you'd like. I suspect the original soul and concept of gothic was birthed with the original team in gothic 1, which promptly died after half the original team having left, and gothic 2 is just an iteration of it.
The lack of shamanistic and cultish elements and faggot ideas like jharkandar is rot creeping in already. Don't get me started on that retard Pankratz and his pirate fetish that he kept shoving into games for fucking decades. Hope that bald nigger goes bankrupt

The armor and technology is that of 15th century Europe in gothic 2 (ships being like 17th century, but Pankratz is a dumb nigger that just wanted pirates), what we see in gothic 1 is more of 12th century.

>"woman population" problem on the continent is somehow about as dire as the one for the legally all-male prison colony from the first game, if not worse
>you start by being able to beat everyone up except for select few monsters like those mini-dragons without cheese and the game never really tops that couple of "dragons" hiding in a plot-irrelevant cave close to the beginning of the game (the orcish BIGGEST boss does have somewhat higher stats than low-rank soldiers you can and will fell by dozens if you bother fighting him, dunno about the human king because the bitch ran away before I could cut through all of the guards in the capital due to the game's "conquer" mechanic), all NPC mages cast only 3 basic spells, plus undead ones shoot lightning instead fireballs
>bugs
>the peak of the game's writing is a stoner village which is fun but it's just one place on a continent of dozens of nothinburger settlements (heard one rebel base is also fun but I screwed myself up by siding with orcs)
Disappointment of a game.

The lack of women in G3 is really noticeable. The demographics of Myrtana, Nordmar and Varant are like 99% men to 1% women, and somehow the women you do see still find time to be armed village guards in Nordmar and Myrtana or not be pregnant and belly dance in Varant. It's absolutely an immersion killer. There's probably more women in Gothic 2 than in 3.

Also who the fuck is the desert nomad fighter chick on the loading screens in 3? I kept expecting to meet her in Varant but she never showed up at any point. Is she cut content?

To be clear: this woman is the one I'm talking about. None of the NPCs I met in the game look anything like her. If she's meant to be one of the slave girls she looks nothing like them (they all look the same pretty much).

I'm not convinced these are meant to be the same character. They don't look similar at all except for both being brunette.

Loading screen woman looks like some desert nomad fremen freedom fighter with some sort of massive cloak and a sword. She also has a face tattoo.

Alima is some slave whore who specifically tells you in the game she wants to be owned by a rich merchant and your job is to deliver her to one. She doesn't seem to be a freedom fighter type at all and prefers to be in sex slavery.

I'm guessing loading screen concept art woman is just cut content.

The nord warrior women were in the game, though. Can see them working as guards. Think one of the settlements even has a 20%+ population of women :o

But they're all unnamed and they have the same "we'll get in trouble if we talk" line all the other women have. Same with the woman that spawns near the orc king's throne if you take it over for the humans.

Feels like the team just had 1 guy trying to put women in after most of the game was already done.

She's meant to be nordmarian? I guess with the cloak it makes sense, on the loading screen she has Varant desert architecture behind her though. But if that was just hastily slapped behind her from the original concept art (that you posted?) then it explains it.

Playing Forsaken Gods really puts vanilla Gothic 3 into perspective. I didn't really think much of Gothic 3's quests while playing it but Forsaken Gods literally and unironically has shit like escort quests where you walk from one side of the town to the other with zero combat or gameplay. Every quest is an escort quest or a fetch quest with absolutely no intrigue or fun setup like some of the stuff in Gothic 3. You can also tell it was written by entirely different people because the nameless hero acts totally out of character.

I wonder what the dev cycle on this expansion was like, even. Do you think the people who got hired by JoWood to make it for a cashgrab had even played vanilla Gothic 3? Or did they just read the storyboards and major plot beats and throw stuff into the map editor. I've noticed that despite Silden being ostensibly the hunter town that is backed up by lore in G3 that it has been a hunting town for ages because of the massive animal-filled plains it actually has no hunters or hunter trainers in it. Geldern also only has some token alchemists (probably because the designer noticed all the alchemy tables and that clued him in) but no named alchemy trainers.

>that moment when you realize every npc that sells rings can also sell ancient tablets

Really sucks. I end up sitting there for 10~ minutes loading the game till they stock at least 2 tablets. Sometimes more. Need those cheap skill increases in magic. Worse if I haven't saved for a while before activating the merchant since they lock in their stock once you first open their inventory to see those rings and no tablets. But it feels like they have three 25% chances to spawn them so getting 1 is easy but any more is a hassle but I NEED them because I don't want to spread my levels too thin but I still want to cast magic.

Then there's when you find out there's enough alchemy books in the game to hit the cap so any points you spent on the skill are wasted.

The worst part about that is the quick learner skill that needs 100 ancient knowledge to learn for 5 points. If you spend any levels on ancient knowledge before getting it you are basically wasting levels so it's most efficient to grab every tablet and read every bookshelf that you can at level 1, then learn it at level 2 and get an extra point for every level after that, and instead of running all over the world for all the bookshelves it's easiest to just savescum every merchant in myrtana until you get enough tablets.

I fucking hate shit in RPGs that you can buy after a certain point which doesn't help you at all retroactively, but would have helped you a lot if you got it earlier.

Gothic's full of shit like that, it's one of the biggest issues with the series. It's like that priest in Gothic 2, where unless you experiment for some reason or see it online, you'd have no way of knowing that his HP bonus is per donation irrespective of the amount, but you can only donate up to a specific amount anyway... meaning that the optimal way is to donate as little as possible over and over.
And at worst (donating 200 gold 5 times versus 50 gold 20 times) you're losing out on 70 fucking hit points, which in early game is a huge deal.

all 3 gods exuded their influence via artifacts
if you side with Xardas you must destroy all of those artifacts, including Adanos' stuff like robes and crown
it is sort of the canon ending (sort of because the follow up stand alone expansion follows it up with Xardas' plan but it was made by different studio)
to get those artifacts you need to kill champion of Innos and Beliar, Adanos doesn't have a mortal champion (unless you count our nameless hero as one)

The hitboxes for some of the enemies are egregiously bad. I think the snappers literally don't have a hitbox except for on their heads, arrows fly right through their bodies - there's multiple enemy types like this. Deer also have a hitbox that seemingly phases in and out of existence depending on what direction they're walking in or something, sometimes the back half of a deer has the hitbox applied and sometimes it doesn't and you have to hit the front half. Community patch doesn't fix it either. It makes archery a huge pain in the ass and you gotta learn every enemy's retarded hitbox that doesn't conform to its model even remotely.
