Is the series worth going back to check out? It's so clearly an influential series but I never ever see anyone bring it up outside what it's influenced or the mmo one in a vacuum.

Definitely, if you're one of the few people who enjoys the simplicity of 80s CRPGs they are some of the best.

Ultima 4 and 5 are the greatest rpgs ever made and I will die on that hill

i personally didn't like the later games in the series. the first three are great, and i guess 4 is alright, but it just didn't have the same heart.

ultima 7 is one of my favourite games, but i don't think i'll ever play older titles

These games were slightly before my time and I could never get into them. Even being the fanatical pc gamer that I am, and have been since 91, I still have zero interest in playing them.

Ultima Underworld and Arx Fatalis were the great spinoffs and technically the best 3D games among the Ultima series and in CRPG history in general.

the series peaked here, everything after is a downgrade
