there are no good online rpgs. their purpose is making an addictive experience, not making an rpg.

Yeah if you buy gold. Otherwise the grind is too shitty. Ironman is for massochists but it is also very pure. The final 10 levels in a skill shouldn't take 12-18 hours each. Otherwise yeah it's fun.

I don't know if I'd call it a good RPG, but it brought a lot of interesting emergent gameplay ideas. I'm still waiting for a single-player game that handles tribrid/gear switching as well as OSRS does for certain bosses. And niche loadouts for specific use cases on a "main" is more interesting than just building up a single BIS kit for your character's build.

It was the shit way back in the day on runescape classic in 7th grade on dial up.

I'll never forgot when I overheard people in Varrock talking about a guy who has been training on rats in Varrock sewer for weeks on end. That guy was my childhood best friend IRL and every time he tried to move out of Varrock sewer his computer would crash. Our group of friends called him the sewer king for years.

RS classic really was fun, extremely basic and excessively tedious even for its time but still fun. I'm not sure that any other MMO ever had it's "end game" so insanely hard to reach than OG RuneScape classic. Somehow this made it even more fun, but I'm not sure that can work these days.

Yes. But only the original Runescape where you could PK anywhere if you were on a PK account. RS with the wilderness and RS2 were garbage.

playing as an ironman makes it have one of the best progression systems ive ever encountered in an rpg. the only issue is the amount of time it takes to progress.

If there was a single player version that massively cut down xp and item grinds and finished the questlines it would be a top 10 of all time RPG.

It's fine. The biggest problem in the game is that they refused to rebalance some old content when new content was added. It was supposed to be a much more limited experience, and the current game is all over the place. Some parts of the game are still built around the idea that rune full is something you really have to work towards. Now, that's absolutely not true.

yes, it's one of the few MMOs that doesn't forget the MASSIVE MULTIPLAYER part of the genre

One thing that's especially great is how one skill can work on another (crafting can help you make simple tools or ranger amor instead of buying it, mining and smelting work on one another and makes you able to make your own armor or mining for runes to use for rune crafting which in turn you can use for magic). More games should use such an intricate system and it's sad games not doing something like this
I also like how dozens of spots have their own theme, no matter how big or small

I've nearly maxed my UIM and most of the game is alright. Some of the skills should be reworked to be more useful. Smithing is poorly scaled. There should be more agility shortcuts to traverse some of the more tedious areas of the game (I think the agility shortcuts should be created through other skills and quests, such as cutting a particular tree down to cross a river, growing a magic plant to climb up a convenient section of wall, etc). Unrestricted accounts rarely have a reason to level skills past quest requirements so it would be a neat way to add more content for each skill

No. It was just something to play on your school computers in 2003. It was popular because it worked on just about any PC at that time & it was a lot of people's first experience in an MMO. The year WoW came out I was in 7th grade and EVERYONE jumped ship from Runescape. Last year I replayed OSRS for the first time in 20 years & it had absolutely no appeal.

I'm maxed and only really play new content nowadays, but it's pretty enjoyable overall. The biggest problems on OSRS are the drop rates being way too low on some bosses, smithing scaling horribly, and XP rates being too low on agility and runecrafting. In spite of that, the quests are actually really fun and it's nice to have permanent progression. You can still kill basically everything in the game with some combination of a whip, fang, blowpipe, rcb, and a trident, although it'll be harder than having max gear, of course.

How exactly did everyone in 7th grade afford a wow subscription? The main reason for runescape's popularity was that it could run on any potato pc AND that it was free.

Yeah. RS is only fun as a single player game anymore. Very soulful with the music and slow opening up of the coll world. Morytania is my favorite. Even in the golden age when the people playing weren't all insane it was pretty limited in the whole multiplayer content thing outside of PKing. WoW was always 100x better with friends than RS.

i like how rs3 has linked the different skills together more in that regard, they're really trying to make it so you can leverage your current skills to assist with most other skills, but i don't really care to play rs any more and it's a damn shame the game wasn't always like that
smithing your own gear originally was just completely untenable, in the time it'd take you to get the mining/smithing levels to make full bronze, your combat stats would be up in the 40s across the board, by the time you get the smithing to make full level 40 gear (i.e. full rune) you could literally have completed every single piece of content in the game, and maxed all your other skills
and yes i have actually, unironically grinded smithing in classic
it was just silly, it's such a shame it took them 18 fucking years to address such a basic thing

>it's one of the few MMOs that doesn't forget the MASSIVE MULTIPLAYER part of the genre
What? With PvP/minigames dead, where is the '>MASSIVE MULTIPLAYER' aspect of runescape?
They made an entire gamemode to play the game solo and never interact with anyone else, which has become the preferred way to play the game.
Not to mention that 'raids' in runescape are like dungeons in any other MMO, being done with a group of 4 (or less) outside of 'mass' events, whereas raids im other '>MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER' games have 20-40 people.
Current day runescape is by all means a 'social' single player game.
