I had a dream the other night where I was playing a Final Fantasy Tactics/Disgaea style SRPG where you commanded a crew of pirates and engaged in ship battles with other pirates/naval forces. There were ship battle portions where you would shoot at each other with cannons and then combat portions where you'd board the opponents ship using swordfighting classes and long range gun classes. There were also engineer classes who would man cannons/repair leaking holes. I'm incredibly frustrated because of how fun the game seemed in my dream, and was wondering if there's any existing pirate-themed RPG's that might cure the un-scratchable itch I now have?

Sounds like a legitimately good idea for a game if some dev wanted to run with it and did things right.

There are pirate RPGs but I don't know of any that are turn based. You can look up the Sea Dogs series, as well as Sid Meir's Pirates.

This has been my dream idea for years and this year I started learning how to code to make it myself, as well as researching naval and piracy history for ideas. Obviously I'm still too early to show anything so now please delete your thread so nobody else steals the idea.

Most people are allergic to pixels. HG is very much pixels. Doesn't help that the game it was inspired by (FFT) looks way better than it.

After some thought today I've decided I'm going to try and make it too. I started reading Treasure Island for inspiration. Also I have a background in music composition and can draw a little. I'm kinda going for a pixely cutesy chibi artstyle like Disgaea or Maple Story. If this sounds in line with what you're trying to do feel free to reach out on discord (whopper7235) otherwise I'll most likely delete this post in a few days

having SRPG battles would be super boring, every fight would be the same with the same gangplank chokepoints etc

Sid Meier's Pirates! aren't an RPG in the strictest sense, but its "do whatever you want" nature makes it similar to an RPG
