first campaign i ever played was dnd (idk what edition) with the high school dnd club, dm was the only one who had played before and thinking back on it he was an amazing dm considering he was a teenager and most players wanted to be murderhobos. one memorable sequence of events was a dwarf paladin losing both his arms in a blood sacrifice to open a dungeon and his god giving him a spiked helmet and spiked boots so a half orc could throw him into enemies and he could then kick them while stuck into them.

Me, not giving a fuck it's the wrong board. Let's go.

>me
>prison before COVID
>violent crime, picked a fight at a party, dude called the cops on me after he ran off to the hospital
>sentenced to 5 years hard labor
>leave county after
>go to a bigger prison
>make friends with librarian
>become a trustee
>we hang out because he's a giga-nerd
>heard stories about D&D games in County going on in the Pen
>never really did it much because on the streets i'm not a sperg comparatively and didn't wanna hang out much with these guys
>mostly did it online
>find out this librarian runs a D&D game in his off time
>YouSonOfABitchImIn.gif
>i take the rogue spot
>everyone else at the table barely has any idea how to do tabletop RPG
>doesn't fully get how sheets work or you can think
>i rework my entire sheet so i can carry tactically
>actually save the party several times and carry just by playing correctly
>librarian is lowkey getting revenge on Tyrones because welcome_to_my_world_bitch.img as GM
>other guys start picking up on you can think outside the box
>Street Smart Skills Activated by Tyrones & Miguels
>we have a lot of fun
>convicts are actually really cunning, generally, so once they figure out how role-playing works they're really good
>he keeps cranking up the difficulty
>we all legitimately bond
>guys start asking me about the nerdy shit i read so they can get ideas when we work out/cook/bullshit/whatever
>librarian's wife keeps mailing him more modules from the streets
>i walk people through it
>lots of their characters become self-inserts
>many of them work through lots of their demons in a weird therapeutic way via role-playing
>as i get short on my time i get shipped for a re-entry program
>::BigSad::

TL;DR I became relatively liked and respected in the first-class citizen section of prison by grouping up with other nerds and introducing hardened convicts to tabletop/pen-and-paper RPGs and made friends along the way I miss. Campaigns have never been the same.
