Just making a thread to say how grateful I am for games (especially remakes) that add battle speed selection. Lunar Remaster lets you choose up to 3x speed and it makes the entire experience enjoyable. I never finished either of the two Lunar titles (got about halfway in each and quit) and a big reason was how burnt I got from slow battles, especially given the fact you can't avoid enemies or use any item to mitigate encounters entirely. You are stuck fighting a lot of random battles at really slow speeds. 3x speed is perfect.

All turn-based RPGs should have up to 3x speed, it makes them comparable to playing emulated and makes grinding way more palatable if you feel the need to super-level your characters to stomp everything.

The problem is most people will just select the fastest speed. Why not just make that the only speed then? Same thing with dialog speed.
It’s not like camera control speed where people have different preferences.

It's a necessity with the old jrpg slop games with constant encounters where pictures slide and shake for 5 minutes.

But I hate using fast forward. Makes me feel like an autist.
If only they made combat snappier back then.

It kind of loses something I think. It kind of breaks immersion when your character just starts running 20x speed and your combat is just auto attacks. They’re called RPGs for a reason. Not only that, but also if you’re able to speed through battles auto attacking and grinding become the best strategy. There’s no skill in grinding and auto attacking but it’s the easiest dominant strategy if you can speed up everything. You’ll never lose any battles if you out level everything. I get why people like it and it’s probably fine if you just want to revisit or marathon some games. But I do think you’re missing out. It’s like reading a book vs reading the cliff notes. If you have the time and patience just play them normally.

Rise of the Third Power has battle speed options with very smooth animations.

Certain games are just too slow. Lunar is one of these. I understand what you are saying though. That's why things like the SMT press turn system works well, you want to play something other than brute forcing your way through.

Sad to say I just beat the Lunar Silver Star Remaster and did auto-battle 3x speed on the final boss. No problem. I will never play the game again because wtf.

That works when you're playing a game on PC but the music also speeds up which sucks. It's nice to have a handheld title with music staying the same speed but battles blazing by.

checked, I don't mind the effect but I understand how it could be immersion breaking. Personally I just view it as a gamer superpower for immersion's sake

This, honestly. I play so few JRPGs where I ever need to grind, so it always blows my mind when I realize how much of the audience views it as a necessary chore of some kind, to the point that they need fast-forward and EXP modifiers to make it "tolerable".

It tells me there's just a huge, fundamental misunderstanding of what the actual appeal of these games is. I think a good subset of players just want to see a story told, and therefor all the combat, equipment management, and character building is viewed as some kind of roadblock. Every moment they aren't directly experiencing plot is perceived as being "wasted". Shit's weird.

Blame Final Fantasy for catering to braindead morons who only care about story and cinematics. Not that FF games were ever truly "challenging", but starting with 6, they definitely let gameplay take a backseat to the story. This kicked off an entire generation of fans who never understood that the original appeal of any RPG was to explore, make choices, and grow stronger, all so you could continue to explore, make other choices, and get even stronger than that. Story was practically a non-entity. The joy of exploring a random cave and finding a random thing was lost because the gameplay was redefined so that players simply ALWAYS expected a thing, and because of that the games had to start specifically guiding players toward the more important things, which lead to players who simply needed to be told where everything is, otherwise they wouldn't even bother looking.

RPGs are one of the few game genres where the entire appeal of them to begin with has been completely subverted. They went from being completely open-ended adventures where the player was tasked with finding things on their own to being completely linear guided tours where everything of note is rubbed in your face or dropped in your lap.

I think it’s more so that a large contingent of gamers are deranged consoomers that will foam at the mouth of whatever scrap of content companies like Nintendo, etc. offer up. A lot of content nowadays are remakes and remasters since developing new AAA games take close to a decade now for whatever reason. Since gamers are subsisting on remake slop they have to feign excitement for bulshit “quality of life” improvements like fast forward and easy mode to rationalize why they continue to support creatively bankrupt companies that gleeful sell them AI upscaled garbage with mobile game tier menus and character artwork.

Silver Star's remake is great, but EB's remake drops the ball in a lot of places in the original, particularly in dungeon design and music choices.
